Woodford: Art, History and Events
Accommodation in Woodford
Woodford combines recurring events with art and history. These highlights can be a good starting point when choosing when to travel: consider whether you’re visiting for a market, an event or the town’s history.
Market visits and seasonal swimming
The Woodford Country Markets are held in the park area at the corner of Archer Street and Elizabeth Street on the third Sunday of each month. Stalls offer locally made jams, relishes, baked goods and pies, as well as antiques and plants. Please check the market dates before travelling if you specifically want to visit the market.
Woodford Swimming Pool has a 25-metre outdoor pool and two toddler wading pools. It operates seasonally from September to April. Please check opening hours and fees before planning a visit.
Events as a reason to travel
The annual Woodford Rodeo takes place at the Woodford Showgrounds. The program includes animal displays, barrel racing, market stalls, food trucks, a ute competition and the official rodeo pattern. Music and entertainment continue into the evening. Unlike the monthly market day, the rodeo is an annual event; check the specific event dates before planning your trip around it.
The Woodford Folk Festival is also held annually and celebrates art, music and culture. It brings together 2,000 musicians, artists and performers; this number may vary from one festival year to the next. While the rodeo program includes animal displays and competitions, among other things, the festival focuses on art, music and culture. Check the festival dates if you’d like to plan your stay around it.
Art and local history
The Woodford Art Trail features more than a dozen artworks in the town centre, including works on the water tower, on bollards and in public spaces. The Windows of Woodford on the water tower consist of window-shaped art panels, each depicting a different aspect of Woodford.
The Woodford Museum displays miniature models of historic local buildings, as well as photographs of everyday life in the region. The models focus on individual historic buildings, while the photographs offer regional perspectives on everyday life.
The Woodford Heritage Walk and Talk Tour covers Woodford’s early history and its development from a timber settlement into a cultural centre. Bookings are required. Historic landmarks visited on the tour include the Leopard AS1 tank in Woodford Memorial Park. Don’t plan the tour as a spontaneous walk; book in advance.
Railway and surrounds
The Durundur Heritage Railway is home to the Australian Narrow Gauge Railway Museum Society and has one of Australia’s largest narrow-gauge steam locomotives. A ride on the Durundur Railway follows the old railway line from Margaret Street to Storey Brook and back. If you’re planning a ride, check the current running dates in advance.
Nearby Woodfordia, just outside the town, is a former dairy farm that has been regenerated into subtropical rainforest. This transformation adds a distinct landscape dimension in the Woodford area to the town’s history and railway themes.
Another accommodation option
Short-term camping stays are available at the Woodford Showgrounds through the Woodford Show Society. If you’re considering this as an alternative to a hotel stay, check availability and arrangements directly with the society.
