Two of Ormeau’s three popular birdwatching spots are Ormeau Sports Park and Upper Ormeau Park. Their landscape features and the bird species that can be observed at each differ. There are also specific landmarks for both parks and a historical connection in nearby Pimpama.

Birdwatching in Two Parks

At Ormeau Sports Park, open green spaces and well-maintained sports fields meet riparian forest and eucalyptus woodland. Nearby, you may spot Scaly-breasted Lorikeet, Lewin’s Honeyeater, Noisy Friarbird, and Grey Fantail, among others. The park combines open spaces with several distinct landscape features. Which birds you actually see during a visit may vary.

Upper Ormeau Park is about 3 km west of Ormeau Sports Park and extends along a section of the Pimpama River. Riparian vegetation has been preserved there. Species that can be observed include Australian King Parrot, Grey Fantail, Double-barred Finch, Red-browed Finch, Scarlet Honeyeater, Tree Martin, and Golden Whistler. Compared with the two parks, Upper Ormeau Park is distinguished by its river section and riparian vegetation, while Sports Park includes open green spaces, sports fields, riparian forest, and eucalyptus woodland.

The location details also distinguish the two spots: Upper Ormeau Park is at the corner of Barrenjoey Drive and Upper Ormeau Road. Ormeau Sports Park is right off the Pacific Motorway. You can tell the two birdwatching spots apart by their surroundings and locations.

History and Sporting Connections

The Pimpama and Ormeau War Memorial is in Pimpama, near Ormeau. It is a stone statue of a soldier and a replica of the original, which was unveiled in 1919 after a public fundraising campaign. The original stood in the cemetery of Pimpama Uniting Church, formerly known as Methodist Church, and commemorated seven local men who died in the First World War. The original was created by AL Petrie and Son of Toowong. At the time, it was Queensland’s largest stonemasonry firm and was responsible for numerous First World War memorials. The memorial’s history thus extends beyond Ormeau to Pimpama, connecting a local tribute with the work of a Queensland stonemasonry firm of the time.

Another sporting connection is the Ormeau Football Club, listed at 5 Halfway Drive in Ormeau, with football as its activity. Alongside the sports fields at Ormeau Sports Park, football and a named club are therefore among the local points of interest.
