Mount Coolum combines nature experiences with specific references to trails and places. The Summit Track, the Boardwalk and Mount Gul'um Park each offer different activities; wildlife is another focus in the national park. For your planning, both the features of the routes and the views and possible wildlife sightings are therefore relevant.

Hike to the Summit

The Mount Coolum Summit Track is a 1.6-kilometre return hike and is classified as Grade 4. It is suitable only for fit hikers. The return hike takes about 1½ hours. The distance and approximate duration address different planning questions: the kilometre figure describes the route, while the time estimate provides a rough guide for planning your day. The summit of Mount Coolum is 208 metres above sea level; this elevation refers to the summit, not the length of the trail. When assessing the track, the time estimate, difficulty grade and stated fitness requirement should therefore be considered together.

Boardwalk and Coastal Pathway

The Mount Coolum Boardwalk is an elevated timber walkway through the Marcoola-Yaroomba Foreshore Bushland Conservation Reserve. It runs from Breezeway Street to a seasonally patrolled beach and provides access to the Coastal Pathway. The pathway connects Marcoola Esplanade with Tanah Street East. This makes it possible to distinguish the Boardwalk’s beach destination from the Coastal Pathway’s two endpoints as separate reference points. The seasonal patrol applies to the beach; the connection to the Coastal Pathway is an additional route link.

Views and Wildlife

A lookout in Mount Gul'um Park offers a view of Mount Coolum in the distance. The mountain is a distant viewpoint destination there, while the Summit Track leads to the summit. In Mount Coolum National Park, the cliffs provide a safe habitat for a pair of nesting peregrine falcons. Visitors may also see echidnas, Northern Brown Bandicoots and Grey-Headed Flying-Foxes. The peregrine falcons are notable as a nesting pair with a habitat, while the other species offer opportunities for wildlife watching.

Practical Information

A notice dated 20 May 2026 mentions a public toilet block beside the car park at the foot of Mount Coolum, with one unisex toilet for people with disability (PWD) and three unisex cubicles for ambulant users. Check the current facilities before your trip if you would like to include them in your plans.

Different considerations apply when choosing outings: for the Summit Track, the time estimate and fitness requirement are key, while the Boardwalk’s beach destination and access to the Coastal Pathway help with orientation. The lookout offers a view of Mount Coolum in the distance; wildlife watching is a separate nature-focused experience. If you are looking for a hotel in Mount Coolum, you can shape your stay around these specific experiences.
