Millaa Millaa: Waterfall, Views and Local History
Accommodation in Millaa Millaa
Millaa Millaa offers several distinct points of interest for a trip: a waterfall, a high-elevation lookout and cultural sites. If you are considering whether the town suits your interests, you can look at these themes separately rather than reducing everything to a single attraction. This helps you choose a destination based on the experiences you are actually looking for.
Millaa Millaa Falls and the Waterfall Circuit
Millaa Millaa Falls is a heritage-listed, 18-metre-high plunge waterfall. Its height makes it a striking natural feature, while its heritage listing adds a cultural connection. The waterfall is also the centrepiece of the Waterfall Circuit. On the Waterfall Circuit route, the journey first goes to Millaa Millaa and then to Millaa Millaa Falls. The town and waterfall are therefore successive points of interest along the route. This distinction is useful when planning, because the name of the town does not refer only to the falls: the lookout, memorial and other cultural sites are also among the destinations mentioned here. A plunge waterfall is one where the water drops freely.
Panoramic views from Millaa Millaa Lookout
Millaa Millaa Lookout offers a different perspective. It is 1,070 metres above sea level and provides views in every direction; its outlook is among the finest in the region. Unlike at Millaa Millaa Falls, the focus here is not the height of a single waterfall but the panoramic views. The lookout is on East Evelyn Road in Millaa Millaa. If you are mainly looking for expansive views, this is a distinct highlight alongside the waterfall, the central feature of the Waterfall Circuit.
Commemoration and local history
Millaa Millaa War Memorial is a stone monument with a plaque, a Rising Sun badge and honour rolls for people from the local district who served in the First and Second World Wars. The combination of plaque, badge and honour rolls connects the monument with remembrance by name. Millaa Millaa also has a statue of early explorer Christie Palmerston and a statue of Pompo, described as Palmerston’s local Indigenous guide. The two statues represent different historical points of reference: one depicts Palmerston, the other Pompo.
Millaa Millaa Museum and the Visitor Information Centre offer a glimpse into a bygone era. They complement the specific memorials represented by the memorial and statues with a broader historical perspective. This lets you distinguish between individual historical figures and the wider view of a bygone era. If you plan to visit the museum or Visitor Information Centre, check current opening hours in advance.
