Kuranda brings together several highlights for planning a trip: rainforest rides, animal experiences, as well as markets, art and history. If you’re looking for a hotel in Kuranda, you can first consider which of these themes you’d like to shape your stay. The experiences also differ in the kind of activities they offer—from rides above the rainforest canopy to animal encounters and craft demonstrations.

Rainforest rides and a riverside walk

The Skyrail Rainforest Cableway runs 7.5 kilometres above the rainforest canopy between Smithfield (Cairns) and Kuranda. The Kuranda Scenic Railway reaches Kuranda on a rainforest journey through 15 hand-built tunnels and over more than 55 bridges. These are two different features of the routes to Kuranda: Skyrail focuses on a ride above the canopy, while the Railway takes you through tunnels and over bridges. For specific travel planning, it’s a good idea to check the current timetables, as operating details may change.

The Army Duck Rainforest Tours at Rainforestation Nature Park travel on land and water. The park is on the Kennedy Highway in Kuranda. This experience complements the rainforest rides with a tour that takes place both on land and on water. If you’re weighing up different experiences for your stay, you can take these different types of rides into account.

The Kuranda Village River Walk runs for 760 metres along the Barron River and takes about 20 minutes. The approximate duration provides a guide for planning your time; trail conditions may change. This walk differs from the rides described above in its clearly defined route along the river and its short distance.

Wildlife and butterflies

The Australian Butterfly Sanctuary is Australia’s largest butterfly flight aviary and exhibit. Behind-the-scenes tours give visitors the chance to learn about the breeding laboratory. Butterfly enthusiasts can therefore enjoy both the flight aviary and exhibit, as well as an insight into breeding. Tour details may change; check before your visit whether the offering is available on your chosen date.

Birdworld Kuranda is home to more than 350 free-flying birds in an enclosed, naturalistic habitat. The birds include an endangered Southern Cassowary. At Kuranda Koala Gardens, visitors can pat and hand-feed swamp wallabies, eastern grey kangaroos and red-legged pademelons. Visitors can also pat a koala for a souvenir photo there, for an additional charge. The animal experiences therefore differ both in the species featured and in the type of encounter described.

Markets, art and history

The Kuranda Heritage Markets are a covered, all-weather market with stalls selling local art, local crafts and regional produce. A visit here therefore focuses on different kinds of local products. Check current opening hours in advance.

The Kuranda Art & Craft Galleries give visitors the opportunity to meet artists in their galleries and watch craft demonstrations. Tropical gardens and historical significance are defining features of Kuranda railway station. The markets, galleries and station each offer a different focus: regional produce and crafts, meeting artists, and the history of the railway station.

The history of the Djabugay people is also part of Kuranda’s (Ngunbay’s) cultural context. It stretches back more than 80,000 years in the rainforests of Kuranda and centres on the Barron Gorge. While the galleries bring artists and craft demonstrations into focus, Djabugay history points to the place’s deep-rooted past. Together, these themes offer different ways to get to know Kuranda during your stay.
