Discover Gladstone Regional: Parks, Nature and Maritime Gladstone
Accommodation in Gladstone Regional
A natural deep-water harbour lies in the centre of Gladstone. It gives the town a maritime character, while botanical collections, green spaces and outdoor activities add other dimensions. A stay in Gladstone Regional can bring together a range of interests: plants and walking trails, outdoor recreation or maritime history. The events calendar is another possible reason to visit.
Botanical collections and rainforest trails
The Gladstone Tondoon Botanic Gardens bring together three main collections of living plants: the Port Curtis Plant Region Collection, the South East Queensland Rainforest Collection and the North Queensland Rainforest Collection. Their names reflect the different regional focuses within the gardens. Walking trails wind through various rainforest types and into an arboretum with blue gum trees, making it possible to combine your visit with a walk through different plant areas.
At the Yūjō Bonsai House, the gardens showcase Tondoon’s unique bonsai collection. Alongside the more extensive collection areas, bonsai have their own dedicated focus. Opening arrangements may change; check them before your visit.
Parks for activity and relaxation
East Shores is a recreational area where locals and visitors can play, relax and stay active. Facilities include a water play area and an outdoor cinema. Memorial Park offers a different experience: its 2.4 kilometres of paved paths are designed for walking, and it also has a modern skate park. If you’re planning a park visit, you can choose between a longer walk and a place to skate.
Reg Tanna Park has ponds and a water play feature. Lions Park combines paths along Police Creek with interpretive information boards; it also has a running track and fitness stations. Each place offers its own ways to spend time outdoors, from enjoying the creek to exercising along the marked paths.
Harbour, coast and events
The Gladstone Maritime Museum on Flinders Parade includes shipwreck artefacts in its collection. Its maritime focus connects with the deep-water harbour in the town centre, but the museum turns attention to historical finds rather than parks or plant collections. If you’d like to include culture and history in your travel plans, consider making a museum visit a separate part of your itinerary.
Spinnaker Park has a swimming beach and nature trails through Khoodghn-Guparl Forest. Gladstone therefore offers two distinct nature experiences: Tondoon Gardens focuses on plant collections and different rainforest types, while the trails at Spinnaker Park pass through a named forest. The Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht Race is held annually. LUMINOUS is an annual series of events in the Gladstone Region. If an event is a deciding factor for your trip, check the dates in advance.
