Point Vernon offers several highlights for a stay: coastal nature, exercise along a long route, park facilities and a memorial site. At Point Vernon Beach, you can explore rock pools at low tide and watch birdlife; Gatakers Bay also offers snorkelling. The 16 km walking and cycling path along Charlton Esplanade, as well as ESA Park, Black Stump Park and the Point Vernon - Kanaka Memorial, add to the attractions. When choosing what to focus on, consider whether you would prefer the beach, a longer route, park facilities or a historical connection.

Beach and snorkelling

At low tide, rock pools become visible at Point Vernon Beach and you can explore them. If you specifically want to visit these pools, plan your beach visit around low tide. The beach also offers abundant birdlife to observe. Both exploring the rock pools and watching birds are highlights here.

Point Vernon Beach at Gatakers Bay offers an opportunity to snorkel. You may see healthy reefs and rocky outcrops, as well as turtles and reef fish. The two beach activities offer different experiences: at low tide, you can explore the rock pools; while snorkelling, you can focus on the underwater world. Turtles and reef fish are possible sightings, not guaranteed encounters.

Walking and cycling path along Charlton Esplanade

The 16 km walking and cycling path runs along Charlton Esplanade from Urangan to Point Vernon and covers almost the entire length of the esplanade. The route is used by walkers, runners, cyclists, skateboarders and scooter riders. It is not limited to one mode of transport: people travel along the path on foot, wheels and scooters.

While individual nature experiences are the focus at the beach, here the route itself takes centre stage. Its length and course give you a clear point of reference if you are considering including a longer route in your plans for Point Vernon.

Parks and their facilities

ESA Park has a toilet and barbecue facilities. The playground is screened from the road. Turtle-friendly lighting helps protect a small but established turtle nesting site nearby. Park facilities and play equipment may change due to maintenance or upgrades; if these details are important to your plans, check the current status before your visit.

Black Stump Park has a covered picnic shelter overlooking the beach, barbecue facilities on site and a playground. The view from the shelter and the facilities give this park a different focus from ESA Park, whose described features also include turtle-friendly lighting.

The Point Vernon - Kanaka Memorial

The Point Vernon - Kanaka Memorial commemorates all South Sea Islanders who were brought to Queensland as labourers to work on sugarcane and cotton plantations. The memorial offers a historical focus alongside the beach, nature and exercise. If memorial sites and the stories they represent are also factors in your choice of destination, this commemoration is one of the specific points of interest in Point Vernon.
