Coochiemudlo Island is in Moreton Bay, off Victoria Point (Warrer Warrer), and is part of the Redlands Coast. The island brings together beach destinations, protected landscapes and places of historical significance. This offers different ways to plan your stay: you can combine time by the water, on walking trails and at local heritage sites. The water at Main Beach is shallow and suitable for swimming; walking trails and the Heritage Trail offer other points of interest.

Between the Coast and Green Spaces

The protected Emerald Fringe is heritage-listed and surrounds Coochiemudlo Island’s entire coastline. It covers approximately 42 hectares and consists of a continuous series of vegetated recreational, environmental and road reserves. These reserves encircle the edge of the island and shape the transition between the coast and green spaces.

East of the jetty, trails lead to the Ramsar-protected Melaleuca Wetlands, which are rich in bird species. Norfolk Beach offers views of North Stradbroke Island (Minjerribah). The wetlands and their birdlife offer a different focus from the views across the water.

Beaches and Island Trails

Main Beach has shallow water for swimming. Beach patrols operate seasonally. Morwong Beach faces north and is suited to a peaceful beach walk, swimming or fishing. The two beaches therefore offer different ways to spend time on the coast: shallow water is the main draw at one, while walking and fishing are also among the activities mentioned at the other.

The Coochiemudlo Island Circuit is a five-kilometre loop that takes about an hour to walk; the actual walking time depends on your pace. Coochie Guided Island Tours also offers a full island tour lasting about two hours. Tour duration may change, so it is recommended that you check the operator’s current information before planning. These approximate times give you a practical comparison between the walking circuit and the guided tour.

An easy walk along the eastern shore passes protected Melaleuca wetlands and beaches. Trail conditions may vary. Including trails and the coast in your plans lets you choose between a circuit, a walk along the eastern shore and beach activities.

Heritage Trail and Local History

The Coochiemudlo Island Heritage Trail has eleven stops. Check the trail’s condition locally before setting out. Coochiemudlo Community Hall holds historical and social significance for the local community. The surviving steps and jetty are also of local significance; they embody historical and rarity values. Together, the trail, hall and jetty offer different points of interest if you are interested in the island’s history as well as its landscape.

More Places for Outdoor Recreation

Pioneer Park has a nature-themed playground, shaded tables, electric barbecues and toilets. As public facilities may change, check the latest information about the facilities before visiting. This lets you include the park as a separate stop in your plans without losing sight of the other beach and trail highlights.

On the western side of the island, the Isle of Coochie Golf Club is set in bushland. If golf is part of your travel plans, check the latest operating conditions in advance. Along with beaches, trails and historic places, the club adds to the range of activities available on Coochiemudlo Island.
