Lakes full of birdsong, an expansive botanic garden and experiences ranging from culture to island life define Bundaberg Regional. When planning your trip, you can include nature, history and tastings, as well as day trips out to sea.

Gardens, Parks and Birdlife

The Botanic Gardens cover more than 27 hectares and contain over 10,000 different trees and shrubs. Their lakes provide habitat that attracts up to 114 bird species. The grounds offer several ways to experience nature: the diversity of the plantings and the life around the water.

The parks of the Bundaberg Region also offer a range of ways to get outdoors: cycling, boating, bushwalking and birdwatching are among the activities available in parks, gardens and natural areas. The Nature Playground has 17 play structures, including swings, a carousel, two large play castles and a smaller castle for toddlers. If you’d like to combine your visit with a ride, you can take the Australian Sugar Cane Railway, which runs for two kilometres through the Botanic Gardens. Operating days and times may change; check the timetable before making plans.

Stories, Art and Culture

At the Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery, three exhibition spaces showcase local and touring exhibitions from Queensland and across Australia. As the exhibition program changes, it’s worth checking what’s on when planning a gallery visit.

Bundaberg’s four Heritage Trails take visitors to significant places, stories and historic buildings. They include a self-guided walk through the Central Business District. The Hinkler Hall of Aviation focuses on Bert Hinkler’s story, interactive exhibits and gliding simulators. It is also home to the original aircraft from his record-breaking 1921 flight.

The Mon Repos Turtle Centre shares information about sea turtles and the conservation and research programs working to protect them. From November to March, Park Rangers lead visitors on experiences with endangered sea turtles: from November to January, visitors can watch turtles nesting, and from January to March, they can see hatchlings emerge. Bookings and fees are required for these experiences.

Cultural tours also offer an insight into the region. Taribelang Bunda Cultural Tours share the history and culture of the Taribelang People. The half-day tour also includes a tasting of local bush tucker.

Tastings and Regional Experiences

The Bundaberg Rum Visitor Experience offers the Bundaberg Rum Distillery Experience. At the Bundaberg Barrel, an interactive gallery explains the brewing process, with guided tastings from the full range of Bundaberg drinks also available. The two offerings have different focuses: the Distillery Experience, and insights into the brewing process followed by a tasting of the drinks range.

At Macadamias Australia, the focus is on a farmgate experience at a multi-generational macadamia farm in Bundaberg. Visitors can sample the distinctive range of macadamia products for free, and guided tours of the orchards are also available. The visit combines insights into growing macadamias with a tasting.

Day Trips Out to Sea

Bundaberg is part of the Southern Great Barrier Reef region and is a starting point for island trips. Lady Musgrave Experience runs several tours daily from Bundaberg. Its full-day tour to Lady Musgrave Island includes swimming, snorkelling and diving in the lagoon. The day trip to Lady Elliot Island also departs daily from Bundaberg. It includes return flights with a scenic flight, use of the day visitor facilities, snorkelling equipment and a choice of a glass-bottom boat tour or a guided snorkelling tour.

The offerings differ in the experiences described: Lady Musgrave focuses on three activities in the lagoon, while the Lady Elliot day trip includes the flight and a glass-bottom boat tour or guided snorkelling tour. If an island visit is part of your travel plans, take the respective departures into account and check the operator’s details.

The Visitor Information Centres in Bundaberg and Childers can help visitors plan and book, and discover other experiences.
