Lake Bennett: Man-made freshwater lake
Accommodation in Lake Bennett
Lake Bennett is a man-made freshwater lake on the Stuart Highway, 87 km south of Darwin. Its history spans a natural waterhole, a dam built for irrigation and small-scale grazing, and its recognition as a recreation destination. Visitors can swim in the lake; canoe and kayak hire was also offered at Lake Bennett. When planning your trip, access arrangements for swimming and the availability of boat hire are separate points to check.
How Lake Bennett was formed
George and Ken Bennett, cattle farmers from Victoria, developed Lake Bennett in the early 1970s on land under a pastoral lease. There was originally a natural waterhole at the site. The Bennetts enlarged it by building a dam for irrigation and small-scale grazing. The artificial freshwater lake therefore has a natural starting point: its creation combined an existing waterhole with a deliberate intervention to make use of the land.
By the end of the 1970s, Lake Bennett was already established as a recreation destination and publicly recognised. The dam’s construction at the beginning of the decade and its recognition as a recreation destination therefore mark different periods in the area’s history. In its early years, the informal names “Bennett’s Dam” and “Bennett’s Lake” were used; the official name is Lake Bennett.
The lake, landscape and activities
Lake Bennett is set in a landscape considered tropical wilderness. The location can therefore be described in terms of two distinct features: the lake is a man-made freshwater body, while the landscape is characterised by its tropical wilderness. The lake’s origins and the description of the landscape offer different perspectives on the destination.
Visitors can swim in the lake; observe local safety advice before entering the water. Public swimming was described as available exclusively via access through the resort. Check the current access arrangements before your visit. Canoe and kayak hire was also offered at Lake Bennett. If you would like to use one of these boats, confirm current availability in advance. This lets you plan swimming and boat hire separately: for swimming, access and safety advice matter; for using a boat, you should also check whether hire is available.
Location and trip planning
Lake Bennett is on the Stuart Highway, 87 km south of Darwin. The stated distance may vary slightly depending on how the route is measured and is best used as a general indication of location. For specific directions, check the route that suits your travel date; the distance in kilometres alone does not indicate travel time.
If you are looking for a hotel for a trip to Lake Bennett, it helps to decide what you want to focus on during your visit: are you most interested in the lake’s development from a waterhole into a recreation destination, swimming, or possibly using a canoe or kayak? The history and location help put the destination in context. For swimming, check access and local safety advice; for boat hire, check current availability.
