Quang Tri
Accommodation in Quang Tri
Quang Tri has several historic places that offer different perspectives on the past. If you are looking for a hotel in Quang Tri, the city’s history can help guide your choice of destination: the citadel served both a military and an administrative function in the past; the Bồ-Đề School building is associated with air raids and bombardments, especially in 1972. Other sites link the city to events of the resistance war against the United States, as well as to memories of war and peace. When planning your trip, it is therefore worth distinguishing between these themes and choosing the focus that interests you.
The Citadel: Fortress, Administrative Seat, and Memorial Site
The Quảng Trị Citadel, also called Cổ thành Quảng Trị, is located in the center of thị xã Quảng Trị. It is considered a special national monument of Vietnam and was designated a national historical monument on December 12, 1986. From 1809 to 1945, it served both as a military fortress and as the administrative seat of the Nguyễn dynasty in Quảng Trị. These two roles offer different perspectives: as a fortress, it had a military character; as an administrative seat, it served the dynasty. A monument was also erected in the center of the citadel to commemorate the 81 days and nights of 1972. Thus, the site brings together a long period of historical use and a clearly defined commemoration of an event in a particular year. The year 1972 refers to the monument’s commemorative purpose, not to the citadel’s earlier period of use.
The Bồ-Đề School Building
The history of the Bồ-Đề School building is different. It is the only house preserved at this site and was designated a national historical and cultural relic in 1986. The former Bồ-Đề School became a relic of air raids and bombardments during the war, especially in 1972. Two distinct aspects shape how the building is viewed: its status as the only house preserved at this site and its history as a war relic. Unlike the citadel, the focus here is not on a former dual role as a fortress and administrative seat, but on its connection with the attacks and bombardments.
Bridge and Memorial Site
Cầu Ga Quảng Trị also offers a different perspective on the city’s history. The bridge is located in thị xã Quảng Trị, has historical and strategic significance, and is associated with events during the resistance war against the United States. Khu di tích lịch sử Nghĩa Trủng Đàn is also located in thị xã Quảng Trị. This important historical memorial site is associated with the victims of that resistance war. The two sites have different emphases: Cầu Ga focuses on the bridge and its connection to events, while Nghĩa Trủng Đàn commemorates the victims.
Memories Along the Thạch Hãn River
The Bến thả hoa bờ Nam Thạch Hãn landing is located on the banks of the Thạch Hãn River in thị xã Quảng Trị. It is a historic site associated with memories of war and peace. This connection differs in form from the specific commemoration of the 81 days and nights of 1972 at the monument in the citadel: at the landing, the focus is on the connection between war and peace. Together with the other sites, it offers another historical focus for your trip to Quang Tri.
