In San Sả Hồ, Thác Bạc Waterfall lies below the Ô-Quý-Hồ Pass; its drop is about 200 meters. In the area around Sa Pa, Hoàng Liên National Park also includes the commune of San Sả Hồ. The park consists mainly of primary forest with evergreen subtropical high-mountain vegetation. Waterfalls and mountain forest sit alongside cultural traditions preserved in the national park.

Waterfalls in the Hoàng Liên Area

At Thác Bạc, a staircase leads to an arched bridge about 30 meters above the waterfall. The stairs and bridge are features of the visitor site, alongside the waterfall itself. Conditions on site may change; check them before your visit. Thác Tình Yêu is also in San Sả Hồ, within Hoàng Liên National Park. A local legend links the waterfall to a fairy who met the woodcutter Ô Quy Hồ.

Villages, Crafts, and Cultural Traditions

In Cát Cát Village, wooden houses and winding stone-paved paths are part of the local landscape. Thác Tiên Sa Waterfall, also known as Thác Cát Cát, is also located in the village. Its features include clear water, a suspension bridge, waterwheels, and mills; a footpath through Cát Cát leads to the waterfall. Check local trail conditions before your visit, as they may change.

Traditional Hmong crafts in Cát Cát include brocade weaving, blacksmithing, and silversmithing. Visitors can watch local artisans make their work. Traditional musical practices of the Hmong, Dao, and Giay are also preserved in Hoàng Liên National Park. Traditional house architecture in the park’s communes includes Hmong wooden houses and Tày stilt houses. Thus, alongside village crafts, the park’s cultural setting also includes musical traditions and different architectural styles.

In 2005, Cát Cát was named a representative village in a community tourism development program in Lào Cai. Ý Linh Hồ lies in the Mường Hoa Valley among rice terraces winding along the mountain slopes. The people living there are predominantly Black Hmong and Red Dao communities. Visitors can take guided brocade-weaving classes and learn about the traditional Hmong technique of drawing with beeswax. A meal with a local family might include smoked pork, free-range chicken, forest vegetables, and sticky rice; arrange the details locally.

Planning Hikes and Getting There

Access to Thác Tình Yêu includes an easy hike of about 1 to 1.5 kilometers from the Trạm Tôn area through the forest. Route conditions can vary seasonally. Another hike runs from Lao Chải to Ý Linh Hồ: it takes about two to three hours and follows winding paths through rice terraces. The scenery along the routes is different—forest on one, terraces on the mountain slopes on the other.

Ý Linh Hồ can be reached by motorbike or taxi via the Sa Pa–Lao Chải–Tả Van route. Road conditions may change, so check them before setting out.
