Dalat: Lake, Colonial Architecture and Agritourism
Accommodation in Dalat
Dalat combines a distinctive urban center with architectural history and activities in varied terrain. Xuan Huong Lake shapes the city’s character; the temperate climate is also one of the features of a visit. Those planning a trip can therefore focus on a range of different interests: walks around the lake, colonial-influenced architecture, or agriculture and nature experiences.
Xuan Huong Lake as a Point of Orientation
Xuan Huong Lake is the center of Da Lat and offers several ways to spend time by the water. Visitors can walk along the shore, rent tandem bicycles, or use pedal boats to go around the lake. If you want to plan around one of these activities, check the availability of the relevant options before your visit.
The lake is therefore not only a defining feature of the city, but also a specific point of reference for a range of leisure activities.
Colonial Architecture and History
The French colonial influence is reflected in Da Lat’s European-influenced architecture. Examples include churches, Art Deco-style hotels, and the railway station. These buildings give the city a different character from the nature and agriculture themes for which Dalat is also visited. Those interested in architecture can appreciate the different building styles as part of the city’s character.
Another historical point of reference is Datanla Waterfall, which was recognized as a historical-cultural site in 1998. The Dalat Palace Golf Club is also part of the area’s history: its 18-hole course opened in 1933 and is one of Vietnam’s oldest golf courses. The two places represent different aspects of local history—a recognized site and a long golfing tradition.
Hiking, Mountain Biking, and Agriculture
Da Lat’s varied terrain is well suited to hiking and mountain biking. Both activities are a good fit for a trip that focuses not only on the city but also on the surrounding landscape. Agritourism offers another perspective: visitors can see and learn about high-tech farming in the area. The experience combines educational and recreational purposes, setting it apart from a sightseeing tour alone.
Individual farm visits also offer insight into agricultural activities. K’Ho Coffee offers a tour of its sustainable farm and roastery. Check the details of the visitor program before your trip. At some strawberry farms in Dalat, visitors can pick ripe strawberries themselves. This does not apply to every farm; check participation and seasonal availability in advance.
The central market offers a different glimpse of local life. Its stalls sell fresh flowers and colorful produce. The market, farm visits, and K’Ho Coffee’s tour highlight different topics: the goods market, cultivation, and coffee processing. Together with hiking and mountain biking, they offer a range of options beyond a simple city walk.
Getting There and Planning Your Trip
Da Lat Airport is 30 kilometers south of the city and connects it with major hubs in the north and south. Sleeper buses connect Da Lat with Ho Chi Minh City. From Da Lat, travelers can also take a train to Trại Mát; this route is no longer connected to Vietnam’s North-South Railway. Routes, connections, and schedules may change, so it is advisable to check before traveling.
This makes it possible to choose a destination based on your travel interests without assuming a particular type of accommodation or amenities.
