Hoan Kiem Lake, also known as Hồ Gươm, is a natural freshwater lake in Hanoi, located in Quận Hoàn Kiếm. On the north shore, Ngoc Son Temple, also known as the Temple of the Jade Mountain, stands on a small, tree-shaded island. In the gardens along the shore, you can watch locals doing their daily exercise and practicing Tai Chi. The view therefore extends from the natural body of water and the temple to activities in public life around the lake.

The Old Quarter and Living Culture

The Hanoi Old Quarter is a national historical and cultural monument. With its 36 streets, it is considered a “living museum” of the founding and development of the imperial capital of Thăng Long. Ca trù is one of the traditional art forms preserved and revived in Quận Hoàn Kiếm, where it continues to be part of public life today. On weekend evenings, Xẩm performances are regularly held at historic sites in the Hanoi Old Quarter; dates may vary.

History in Museums and Buildings

Hỏa Lò Prison was built in 1896 by the French colonial authorities. The memorial site includes a monument, a reconstructed model of prison life, a guillotine, and exhibitions featuring artifacts and documentary photographs.

The Vietnam National Museum of History displays nearly 8,000 valuable exhibits at two locations, covering Vietnamese history from prehistoric times to the present day. One location is at No. 1 Tràng Tiền Street in Quận Hoàn Kiếm; its exhibits cover the period from prehistoric times to the end of the Nguyễn dynasty in 1945. The Vietnamese Women’s Museum at 36 Ly Thuong Kiet Street complements this perspective on history and society with artifacts, traditional costumes, handicrafts, personal accounts and photographs documenting the role of Vietnamese women. Before visiting a museum, it is advisable to check its current operating status, as opening arrangements may change during renovations.

Architecture, Performances and Everyday Life

The Hanoi Opera House was built between 1901 and 1911. Its design is modeled on French opera houses and influenced by the architecture of modern European opera houses. The Thang Long Water Puppet Theatre at 57B Đinh Tiên Hoàng Street stages water puppet shows 365 days a year, with five to seven performances daily. As schedules may change, check the current performances before your visit.

Cultural gatherings take place at Heritage House 87 Mã Mây, where traditional handicrafts are also showcased. A vibrant street food scene is another part of contemporary cultural life in Quận Hoàn Kiếm. Alongside museums and buildings, the district’s cultural offerings therefore include the performing arts, crafts and food.
