Cao Bằng City: History, Culture and Geopark Routes
Accommodation in Cao Bằng City
Cao Bằng City offers a range of options to help plan your trip: historic memorial sites, architectural history, cultural encounters, regional specialties and themed routes in the Non nước Cao Bằng Geopark. There is also a destination outside the city center in the surrounding area. Organizing your days around these different interests can help you decide which places and topics suit your trip.
Memorial Sites and Architectural History
The Hoàng Đình Giong Memorial Site comprises landscaped grounds, a statue of Hoàng Đình Giong and a memorial house. It commemorates one of the first Communist Party members from Cao Bằng and an influential co-founder of its party organization. The site thus combines specific elements of the memorial with the city’s political history.
Another stop in the city’s history is Phố Cũ Pagoda. It was built during the Lê period, in 1679, as Quan Đế Miếu. On December 31, 2002, the provincial government recognized it as a historical and cultural monument. Its historical name and its later designation as a monument mark two distinct aspects of its history: its original identity as Quan Đế Miếu and its recognition as cultural heritage.
The Hồ Chí Minh Monument is located in the center of Cao Bằng. It is regarded as a cultural work of political, historical and humanistic significance. Together with the memorial site and the pagoda, it shows how different forms of remembrance and architectural history are represented in the city.
City Culture and Regional Specialties
Kim Đồng Pedestrian Street is being developed as a cultural destination for residents and visitors. It is also a venue for quarterly cultural gatherings with local associations, youth groups and residents. This gives it a different focus for trip planning than the historic memorial sites: here, cultural activities and community life take center stage.
Cuisine is also part of getting to know Cao Bằng. Northern Vietnamese specialties such as Phở Chua and Bánh Cuốn are available. The city lies on the Sông Bằng River and has developed into a lively center of growth. This combination of a riverside location, city life and regional cuisine complements the cultural and historical themes without reducing them to a single itinerary.
Geopark Routes and Their Different Planning Statuses
The Non nước Cao Bằng Geopark’s fourth discovery route connects Cao Bằng with Thạch An and Quảng Hòa. In the city, it leads to places including the Geopark Information Center, the Fossil Lake in Sông Hiến Ward and the Chu Trinh gabbro iron ore mine. The route provides an overview of various Geopark stops. If you want to visit individual sites, check access conditions in advance.
The “Khám phá Tam Giang” discovery route is planned to take two hours. It passes the Hồ Chí Minh Monument, the national Hoàng Đình Giong Memorial Site, the Provincial Administrative Center Square, the Kỳ Sầm Monument in Vĩnh Quang, the Cao Bằng food market and Kim Đồng Pedestrian Street. The city administration also planned “Thành Mục Mạ về đêm” and “Dấu ấn lịch sử,” each lasting two hours, as part of the development of three city routes. In September 2024, work on the three discovery and exploration tours was still underway. If you want to include one of them in your plans, check in advance whether it is currently offered as a tour.
A Destination Nearby: Kỳ Sầm Temple
In Hòa An, near Cao Bằng, Kỳ Sầm Temple commemorates the historical figure Nùng Trí Cao. The road distance from the city center is five kilometers via Pác Bó Road. A festival is held every year on the tenth day of the first lunar month. The program includes traditional games and performances such as tossing còn balls, wrestling, martial arts, football, and lion, dragon and qilin dances. The lunar date is a useful reference for planning your trip; check the latest festival dates before you travel.
Choose a Hotel Based on Your Interests
When searching for hotels in Cao Bằng City, the city’s different themes can help guide your travel decisions. Memorial sites and the pagoda offer a historical focus, the pedestrian street is a place for cultural encounters, and the Geopark routes explore additional places and themes. Kỳ Sầm Temple is outside the city center and its annual festival gives it a distinct seasonal connection. Consider which of these aspects matter to your stay and plan accordingly.
