Discover Cao Lãnh City: Culture and History
Accommodation in Cao Lãnh City
Cao Lãnh City brings together several cultural themes: archaeological evidence, historic memorial sites, and community events. When planning your trip, it’s worth considering which of these aspects interest you—collections and remembrance culture, or markets and community activities.
Culture and history in Cao Lãnh
Đồng Tháp Museum
The Đồng Tháp Museum in Ward 4, Cao Lãnh, offers insights into the history, culture, and people of Đồng Tháp, including everyday life and the national liberation struggle. Its subject matter therefore ranges from social life to the history of the liberation struggle.
The museum houses numerous artifacts from the Óc Eo culture of the Kingdom of Phù Nam, excavated at Gò Tháp. These archaeological finds complement its themes of everyday life and more recent history with another historical perspective. On September 5, 2008, the museum was recognized as a provincial historical and cultural monument. Its buildings display French architectural style.
Nguyễn Sinh Sắc Memorial Site
The Nguyễn Sinh Sắc historical memorial site covers a total of 10 hectares and is divided into three areas. Its features include a reconstructed section of the traditional village of Hòa An, with fruit gardens, a monkey bridge, and traditionally styled houses. Nhà sàn Bác Hồ is also part of the memorial site: the building is a life-size model, at a 1:1 scale, of Hồ Chí Minh’s stilt house in Hanoi.
Each feature offers a different point of interest for visitors interested in history: the village showcases traditional architectural forms and fruit gardens, while the model recreates a specific architectural original. Together with the layout of the ten-hectare site, these features represent different aspects of the memorial site.
Temple and memorial ceremony
Chùa Hòa Long is associated with the work of Nguyễn Sinh Sắc. The temple’s Buddhist community helped protect his tomb. The tomb and temple complex of Đỗ Công Tường is another historic landmark in Cao Lãnh: under Decision No. 2395/QĐ-BVHTTDL dated July 8, 2019, it was classified as a national monument.
A memorial ceremony is held annually at the Đỗ Công Tường complex on the 9th and 10th days of the sixth lunar month. Traditional rites are accompanied by cultural, artistic, and sporting events. Since the date follows the lunar calendar, it varies from year to year in the Gregorian calendar. If you’d like to plan your trip around the ceremony, check the date for the relevant year.
Markets and community experiences in Tân Thuận Đông
A rural market is held every Saturday in the commune of Tân Thuận Đông, which is part of Cao Lãnh’s urban area. Offerings include local dishes, fruit, drinks, vegetables, and fresh river fish and shrimp. Market hours and programming may change, so check the information for your planned visit date.
Experiences in Tân Thuận Đông include cycling through fruit gardens, making cakes together, traditional games, and Đờn-ca-tài-tử music from southern Vietnam. Alongside the market, these offer community activities and music as other themes to explore. While the museum and memorial sites focus primarily on history, collections, and remembrance culture, Tân Thuận Đông is about market life and community experiences.
