Al Jazirah Al Hamra is defined by historic lanes, fortifications and traditional residential architecture. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in this destination, this cultural focus will help you understand the place through its historical character. Several of these themes come together at the Heritage Village Al Jazeera Al Hamra: lanes, a round watchtower, a mosque and extensive courtyard houses of different designs.

Historic Lanes, Fortifications and Trade

The Heritage Village Al Jazeera Al Hamra has historic lanes. Beside them stands the round watchtower, part of the fortifications. It is the oldest part of the fortifications and was built to secure access to the former island. In this way, the village's network of lanes is linked to a fortification whose purpose is clearly defined.

Nearby, the Al Jazeera Al Hamra Souq was the center of commercial activity in the surrounding area. Its historical role adds the area's trading function to the architectural perspective. The lanes, fortifications and souq thus represent different aspects of the place's history.

Residential Architecture and Building Materials

A mosque is among the traditional features of Al Jazeera Al Hamra. There are also extensive courtyard houses of different designs. The variety of house forms offers a distinct perspective on the townscape; the materials used provide another perspective on traditional building methods.

Traditional buildings were constructed using coral blocks, fossilized beach rock, mangrove beams and date palm trunks. Layers of shells were also used for drainage. The building methods can therefore be considered both in terms of the different courtyard houses and the materials listed and their function.

A Heritage Program for Schools

Throughout the school year, schools in Ras Al-Khaimah can combine classroom lessons with hands-on heritage experiences at the Heritage Village Al Jazeera Al Hamra. As program availability may change, schools should confirm in advance that it will be offered.

Cultural History in the Wider Destination of Ras Al-Khaimah

In the wider destination of Ras Al-Khaimah, Al Jazeera Al Hamra is the only remaining historic pearl-diving village in the entire Gulf region.

The National Museum of Ras Al Khaimah houses archaeological and ethnological artifacts. Saqr Park was inaugurated in 1991 by Sheikh Saqr bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, who ruled the Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah from 1948 to 2010. Al Qassimi Palace was built in 1985 by Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Humaid Al Qasimi on a hill in Al Dhait North.

The Sheikh Zayed Mosque is also a distinct architectural feature of Ras Al-Khaimah: it has 60 columns, a roof made of palm fronds, three large doors and 31 windows with geometric carvings. This makes it possible to distinguish the historic village and architectural ensemble of Al Jazirah Al Hamra from other cultural themes in the wider Ras Al-Khaimah destination.
