Udon Thani: regional culture and nature

In the wider Udon Thani destination, Phu Phrabat Historical Park offers a distinctive perspective on history and geology. It is considered the world’s most outstanding example of the Sīma stone tradition of the Dvaravati period, from the 7th to the 11th century. The megalithic rock shelters were shaped by glacial movement and the varying erosion of rock layers. Rock paintings depicting human figures, palms, animals and geometric patterns appear on the surfaces of 47 rock shelters. Since its conversion into a Buddhist religious centre in the 7th century, Phu Phrabat has continued to be used as one.
