Ubon Ratchathani in Thailand combines river landscapes with archaeological traces, rock formations and textile crafts. Plateaus and mountain ranges shape the province, with the Mun River flowing through its center. Its distinctive features include Don Tana Island, prehistoric rock paintings, nature trails and a traditional candle festival. You can choose the focus of your trip according to whether you are looking for landscapes, culture or a festive occasion.

River Landscapes and Rock Formations

Don Tana lies across the Mun River, dividing it into two channels. At Kaeng Tana, a suspension bridge connects the park office to Don Tana; it is Thailand’s longest pedestrian suspension bridge. Tad Ton Waterfall in Kaeng Tana has a pool below the falls where visitors can swim. As water conditions vary by season, it is a good idea to check the latest conditions if swimming is important to your plans.

In Phu Chong-Nayoi National Park, the large Huai Luang Waterfall plunges over a cliff from a height of about 45 meters. Sam Phan Bok offers another landscape shaped by water: erosion has formed more than 3,000 small and large pools in the natural rock formations. Here, two different landscapes take center stage—a waterfall with a high rocky edge and a rock landscape shaped by pools.

Archaeological Traces and Craftsmanship

The archaeological site of the prehistoric rock paintings at Pha Taem is registered as an ancient monument. Another archaeological trace can be found in Phra Cave in Kaeng Tana: it contains an inscription and the base of a Shiva lingam. Both are dated to approximately the 12th to 13th Buddhist centuries.

Ban Kham Pun in Amphoe Warin Chamrap is known for its blended Mat Mi silk, embroidered with colored silk as well as silver and gold threads. Visitors can also watch the intricate weaving process there. If you would like to include this experience in your plans, check visiting arrangements in advance. This offers a way to appreciate both the textile-making process and the finished material as two aspects of local craftsmanship.

Nature Trails and Viewpoints

To access the route at Phu Hin Dang, you must contact national park staff so they can arrange a guide. Visitors should use the nature trail at Sao Chaliang only when accompanied by a staff member. The sunrise can be seen from Pha Chanadai viewpoint in Pha Taem National Park. If you like to start the day with a view, you can plan an early start for this spot.

Ubon Zoo follows a Jungle Park model, combining animal habitats with the existing forest within its grounds. Its nature trails include three routes of different lengths: 318 meters, 740 meters and 1,464 meters. One-day educational visits and two-day overnight camps with one night’s stay are offered for student groups from public and private educational institutions. If you plan to include the trails in your itinerary, check their condition before your visit.

Candle Festival and a Culinary Highlight

The Ubon Ratchathani Candle Festival takes place on Khao Phansa Day. Highlights include a parade of large, intricately carved candles through the city; the exact dates vary from year to year. If the festival is the reason for your trip, check the event dates for that year. As a culinary suggestion, white pork sausage is recommended for food lovers to try.
