Ban Dan Lan Hoi: Archaeology, Tradition and Caves
Accommodation in Ban Dan Lan Hoi
Ban Dan Lan Hoi brings together archaeological traces with cultural and natural themes. The Wang Hat site dates back to the late Iron Age, while Ban Choeng Khiri has a Chuchok performance tradition that has continued for hundreds of years. Caves and bats add their own natural highlights. Here, the history of archaeological finds, a traditional performance culture, and landscape themes come together in one destination.
Archaeological traces of Wang Hat
The Wang Hat archaeological site is located in Taling Chan Subdistrict, Ban Dan Lan Hoi District, Sukhothai Province. Finds include bronze objects, ceramics, and multicolored beads; weaving tools, jewelry made of semiprecious stones, and glass beads have also been found. Two skeletons were also recovered at the site. Their age has been provisionally estimated at around 2,500 years. It is worth keeping the dates distinct for context: the site dates back to the late Iron Age, while the provisional estimate of around 2,500 years applies to the skeletons. Ban Wang Hat in Ban Dan Lan Hoi District is considered evidence of prehistoric settlement in Sukhothai.
Tradition and landscape
The Chuchok performance tradition in Ban Choeng Khiri has continued for hundreds of years. It is associated with Wat Choeng Khiri in Lan Hoi Subdistrict. Alongside the archaeological finds, this represents a distinct cultural tradition that has endured over a long period. The terrain in Ban Dan Lan Hoi is flat; the area lies west of Ramkhamhaeng National Park. These two features provide a brief overview of the terrain and the district’s location.
Caves, bats, and excursion spots
Tham Chao Ram is a large cave with an extensive interior. Sunlight enters through an opening in the ceiling. The cave is also home to several species of insect-eating bats. Visitors come to watch several species emerge from the cave at around 6 p.m. The time is approximate, and seasonal conditions can affect visibility. If you plan to watch them, take both the approximate time and seasonal visibility into account.
Khao Fang Cave in Wang Nam Khao Subdistrict is promoted as an excursion destination and a place to learn about nature. Huai Nong Khao Reservoir in Wang Nam Khao Subdistrict is also promoted as a place for excursions, recreation, and fishing. The three destinations have different focuses: Tham Chao Ram is known for its cave and bats, Khao Fang for learning about nature, and the reservoir for recreation and fishing.
Sukhothai as a broader historical setting
The broader destination of Sukhothai has a historical context that extends beyond Ban Dan Lan Hoi. In the 13th and 15th centuries, Sukhothai was the political and administrative capital of the first Kingdom of Siam. In Sukhothai Historical Park, Wat Si Chum houses the so-called Talking Buddha in a mondop, of which only four walls remain. Wat Mahathat has a pagoda-shaped stupa considered characteristic of Sukhothai art. These sites represent distinct historical and architectural themes within Sukhothai.
The broader destination of Sukhothai also offers a nature experience: in Ramkhamhaeng National Park, an approximately three-kilometer nature trail leads from the park office to Hin Rang Waterfall. The walk takes around two hours.
