Sadao: Nature, Markets and Hammock-Making
Accommodation in Sadao
Sadao combines nature at Khao Le with a municipal forest area, a market and a hands-on craft activity. The local attractions appeal to different interests: the mountain offers a climb and views, the Sadao Municipal Fresh Market features vegetables from home gardens, and Chao Thin Sadao offers hammock-making. You can tailor your stay to whether you want to experience the landscape or learn about a specific local activity.
Nature at Khao Le
In Sadao Municipality, the forest area at Khao Le covers 325 rai, about 52 hectares. Khao Hua Lan and Khao Khiao are peaks on Khao Le, with viewpoints overlooking a sea of mist. The area is popular with tourists, climbers, hikers, and nature and adventure enthusiasts. The forest area and the peaks together shape the landscape at Khao Le.
The climb up Khao Le takes no more than 30 minutes and, in suitable weather, offers a 360-degree panoramic view of the sea of mist, while swallows fly around. Views of the sea of mist depend on the weather and cannot be expected on every day you visit. Check the current access conditions before your visit, as they may change.
Further afield in the region, the long, continuous Sankalakhiri mountain range can be seen in the distance along the border between Thailand and Malaysia. Visibility varies.
Market and Crafts
Vendors at the Sadao Municipal Fresh Market sell vegetables from home gardens. These include ลูกเนียง, ผักปลัง, ดอกแค and ยอดมะม่วงหิมพานต์, among others. As individual vendors and products may vary, this selection is an example of the market’s character, not a fixed assortment available on every visit.
At Chao Thin Sadao, you can learn to knot hammocks from fabric scraps under the guidance of the shop owner’s father. The activity involves knotting, and fabric scraps are the material used. Unlike a visit to the market, the focus here is on taking part yourself rather than on vegetable offerings. If you are looking for different experiences, a market visit and a guided craft activity offer two distinct options.
