Amphoe Kaset Wisai brings together historic sanctuaries, an archaeological settlement, and an agricultural landscape. To get your bearings, it is worth distinguishing between their different highlights: Ku Ka Sing represents Khmer-influenced sacred architecture, Ban Muang Bua is an archaeological settlement, and the Ku Ka Sing community is known for its craft and ritual traditions. This lets you focus on the destination’s themes according to your interests.

Sanctuaries and Archaeological History

The historic sanctuary of Ku Ka Sing (Wat Burapha Ku Ka Sing Noi) is located in the subdistrict of Ku Ka Sing, in Kaset Wisai District, Roi Et Province. It was built in the 16th Buddhist century, following the example of Khmer culture. Ku Kradon at Wat That in Kaset Wisai District is a different type of structure: the rectangular sanctuary is made of laterite and has a single entrance. Ku Muang Bua, meanwhile, is a stone sanctuary from the Angkor period, located near the Ban Muang Bua archaeological site. Each has distinct features: Ku Kradon is notable for its form and building material, while Ku Muang Bua stands out for its connection to the Angkor period and its location near the site.

The Ban Muang Bua archaeological settlement is surrounded by moats and earthen ramparts. Its roughly oval layout measures about 800 by 1,000 meters; inside is an earthen rampart or mound about 7 to 10 meters high. These dimensions and the location of the inner rampart give a concrete picture of the settlement’s layout. From Kaset Wisai District, reach the site via Highway 214, then take the Kaset Wisai–Sarai local road.

Two museums offer different perspectives on the community’s history. The Muang Bua Museum presents local history and culture, as well as archaeological artifacts from the ancient community of Ban Muang Bua. The Ban Ku Ka Sing Intellectual Heritage Museum was established in 2005 as a learning center for the local community and presents its history and archaeology. Contact the Ban Ku Ka Sing Intellectual Heritage Museum in advance before visiting.

Landscape and Local Culture

The subdistrict of Kaset Wisai is predominantly a low-lying agricultural plain. Thai Hom Mali rice is grown across much of the area. The natural waterways Lam Siao Yai and Lam Kuk Ku run through the southern part of the subdistrict. Alongside the archaeological sites, agriculture and waterways are defining features of the landscape.

In Ku Ka Sing, the community sells handmade woven rice bags and reed mats in various sizes and patterns. The selection may change. Ku Ka Sing is also home to the traditional paper-cutting art of Lai Ping Kop, which uses scissors. Woven products and paper cutting are distinct expressions of local craftsmanship.

The Song Ku ritual is also held in Ku Ka Sing: it takes place each year between April and May, though the exact dates may vary. If you would like to plan your trip around it, check the dates in advance. Another local attraction is Muang Bua Garden, which features a dinosaur fun park and a restaurant. So, alongside sanctuaries and settlement history, the destination also offers leisure activities and dining as distinct experiences.
