Mai Khao offers more than just a connection to the beach: its long stretch of coastline, the Phru Che San wetland and the community traditions of Ban Mai Khao offer different ways to experience the destination. When choosing a hotel stay, it helps to distinguish between these facets: some describe the landscape, while others reflect local culture and cuisine. This way, Mai Khao is not reduced to a single reason for travelling.

Beach and landscape in Mai Khao

Mai Khao Beach is located in Sirinat National Park and is considered Phuket’s longest beach. It stretches for about 10 kilometres. There is also a specific spot for aircraft photography: the airplane viewpoint is on Mai Khao Beach, and visitors come there to photograph aircraft. These are distinct attractions: the long beach in the national park and a viewpoint that visitors use as a photo spot. If you are considering Mai Khao for a trip, you can decide whether the coastal landscape or aircraft photography better matches your interests.

Phru Che San offers a different kind of landscape. This large wetland is located in Moo 3 of Mai Khao Subdistrict. At its centre is an island with various plants, including reeds and grass. The wetland adds a landscape that differs markedly from the beach to Mai Khao’s nature attractions. When choosing where to visit, you can distinguish between the coastline and a wetland with an island and plant life, without combining them into a single landscape.

Community and tradition in Ban Mai Khao

The beach also has significance for the Ban Mai Khao community. In 2022, Thai PBS described Mai Khao Beach as closely connected to the community; residents said it was a place where they played as children. This perspective adds a personal connection to the beach alongside its landscape. Ban Mai Khao is also home to Phuket’s last remaining rice fields. They cover an area of 78 rai and 2 ngan. Residents work together to grow the rice, and traditional tools are used during the harvest instead of a harvester. The rice fields thus combine a specific area of land with shared cultivation and harvesting practices.

Local products, cuisine and events

Chom Lae Market was established by the community together with local stakeholders. Community products and snacks are sold there. If you would like to include the market in your travel plans, check its opening hours in advance. The traditional plant Lin Han is also part of the local food culture: it is grown in the community and eaten fried as a vegetable. According to Thai PBS, Lin Han is harder to find. The market and the plant offer different points of interest: the market features community products and snacks for sale, while Lin Han is a traditional plant and a way of preparing it.

The Mai Khao community holds an annual sea turtle release on 13 April. If you are planning a trip around this date, check in advance whether the event is taking place. The event offers a different way to experience the destination than its beaches, landscapes and local cuisine, and may therefore be a consideration in its own right when planning your trip.

Choose between the different facets of the area according to what matters most for your stay.
