Hengchun offers two distinct perspectives to consider when planning your trip: the history of Hengchun Old City and the landscape in the area around the destination. Around Longluan Lake, the landscape and birdlife form a natural focal point. In the late Qing era, the Old City served as the county government seat. When considering Hengchun as a destination, you can treat its nature and urban history as separate focal points.

Longluan Lake and Seasonal Birdlife

Longluan Lake lies about 3 km southwest of Hengchun. At full water levels, it covers up to 175 hectares; the actual water area varies. Longluan Lake is designated a special landscape protection area within the national park. Around the lake, wetlands, fishponds, fields, scrubland, and secondary forest provide a habitat for birds. This habitat therefore extends beyond the water and includes a variety of landscape types.

More than 200 bird species have been recorded in the area over the years, with migratory birds accounting for over 70 percent. Every August and September, large numbers of snipe migrate across the Hengchun Peninsula. In winter, large flocks of ducks stay at Longluan Lake and nearby ponds. Late summer and winter therefore offer different seasonal nature themes. If seasonal birdlife influences when you travel, you can weigh these time periods against each other when planning your trip.

Hengchun Old City and Its History

In the late Qing era, Hengchun Old City served as the county government seat. A walking tour can begin at the West Gate and continue past the Queen of Heaven (Mazu) Temple and the South Gate to the East Gate. The Old City's historic administrative role places it in a specific period, while the sequence of gates and the temple gives the walk its own spatial direction.

Chuhuo and Environmental Education

Chuhuo offers a different aspect of nature. The site lies outside Hengchun's East Gate and outside Kenting National Park. There, underground natural gas escapes through cracks in the mudstone and burns when ignited. At Longluan Lake, the focus is on habitats and bird species; at Chuhuo, it is on a process underground.

The Longluan Lake Nature Center provides environmental education for the public. This educational purpose complements the landscape and birdlife themes with another way to engage with the area. Environmental education focuses not only on individual phenomena, but also on understanding natural connections.

Comparing Nature Themes and the Old City

For your planning, these focal points differ in their timing: bird migration occurs during seasonal windows, while a walk through the historic Old City follows a specific sequence of places. When weighing nature and cultural themes against each other, you can decide whether the season for birdlife or the cultural and historical walk matters more to you.
