At Singda Harbor, you can watch fish being unloaded and auctioned. Some vendors also sell small quantities to individuals. This means you can both observe the fish trade and make a limited purchase. If you are interested in fishing and food processing, other places in Kaohsiung offer different insights.

Fishing and Local Experiences

In Mituo, visitors can experience making fish balls with the local fisheries association. At Aozihliao Fishing Port, the fisheries association has planned a one-day fishing experience. It is intended to combine resources from the fishing village with an introduction to making fish ice. The two offerings have different focuses: making fish balls is the main activity in Mituo, while the planned experience in Aozihliao brings together fishing village resources and fish ice.

Buddhist Culture, Museums and History

The Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum in Dashu is a major landmark of Buddhist culture, historical heritage, and modern architecture, as well as an important pilgrimage site. Behind the museum stands a seated bronze Buddha: its body is 50 meters high, and its total height is 108 meters. It is considered Asia’s largest seated bronze Buddha. The museum also houses a Buddha relic, described as one of only three surviving Buddha relics in the world. It was brought to Taiwan in 1998 and enshrined at the museum in 2011.

The Kaohsiung Museum of History tells the story of Kaohsiung and Taiwan through exhibitions and educational programs; its collection includes more than 8,000 objects. The museum is housed in the former city government building. After the government moved in 1992, the building was converted into a history museum. For art lovers, the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts collects works by Taiwanese artists and presents thematic, research, and international exhibitions. The Aviation Education Exhibition Hall, meanwhile, displays 44 actual military aircraft from China, the United States, and the Soviet Union.

Lotus Pond also brings together scenery and history. During the Qing era, it was one of the Eight Views of Fengshan. Today, you can walk or cycle along a continuous lakeside path between scenic attractions; a variety of water sports are also available. History, exercise along the shore, and water sports offer different ways to experience the area.

Art Venues, Bridges and Routes on Cijin

Dagang Bridge is Taiwan’s first horizontal rotating observation bridge, connecting Pier-2 Art Center with Zhan Er Ku. You can cross it on foot or walk your bicycle across. Pier-2 Dayi Station on the Kaohsiung Light Rail is right next to the bridge. Pier-2 Art Center regularly hosts outdoor concerts, art markets, and immersive exhibitions. If you would like to pair your visit with an event, check the schedule when planning.

Cijin’s cycling network has five circular routes, including the Maya Gaws Memorial Cycling Path. Cijin Starlight Tunnel was converted from a military tunnel built during Japanese rule; since its conversion in 2005, it has served as a recreational route for visitors and cyclists. Cijin Windmill Park is located on the tourist route to Cijin Fishing Port and includes an observation deck and an event plaza. At Cijin Shell Museum, you can see a public shell exhibition featuring about 2,000 species of shellfish.

Historic Routes and Landscapes

The Shoushan National Nature Park route leads to the old city, ruins, and military heritage. It connects historic sites and military remains with the ecology of a tropical semi-evergreen monsoon forest. The route is about 1.5 kilometers long and takes approximately 120 minutes. Feeder buses provide access from Ecological District and Zuoying MRT stations. The Old City cultural bus also runs from Zuoying High-Speed Rail and MRT Station to the historic sites.

For a geological focus, visit Tianliao Moon World: its badlands landscape formed through the long-term erosion of marl or mudstone by rain and river water. At Luodishan Nature Park, you can explore nature trails and an observation point. From there, you can see geological formations, birds, the sea, and the Gangshan hills.

Kaohsiung has more than 950 kilometers of cycling routes. The city plans to connect cycling trips with seasonal attractions, regional foods, and commercial districts. When choosing a hotel, you can first consider which themes will shape your trip: fishing and the harbor, art and museums, historic sites, cycling, or nature. This can help you tailor your search for hotels in Kaohsiung to the places and experiences that interest you.
