This historical, archaeological and architectural monument is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under criterion IV. Within the fort, ecclesiastical heritage, exhibitions and a walking route along the ramparts come together. When deciding which focus suits your trip, you can distinguish between the site’s history, the military themes presented there and the views along the fort walls.

History and heritage in Galle Fort

All Saints Anglican Church is located within Galle Fort and is one of the fort’s heritage buildings. The Historical Mansion Museum offers a different focus, with artifacts from the colonial era and the lifestyle of that time at its center. Taken together, the church as part of the fort’s heritage and the presentation of objects and ways of life complement one another without covering the same subject. When weighing cultural interests for your stay, you can distinguish between ecclesiastical heritage and depictions of historical everyday life.

Walking route, landmarks and views

The walking route along the fort ramparts takes you around Galle Fort, with specific landmarks and views along the way. It passes cricket fields, the lighthouse and various bastions; it also offers views of the sea, the harbour and the interior of the fort. This sets the route apart from the exhibition rooms: along the ramparts, the sequence of landmarks and the views shape the experience, while the exhibitions focus on objects and historical themes. This allows you to explore Galle Fort both via the walking route and through its exhibitions.

Military history at three gunpowder magazines

The military exhibitions also have different focuses. In the exhibition galleries, faithfully reproduced weapons, ammunition and human figures illustrate the fort’s military heritage. Three underground gunpowder magazines differ in location, period and method of presentation. The magazine at Star Bastion covers the Dutch occupation in the 17th and 18th centuries; the magazine at Black Fort focuses on military history from the Portuguese occupation in the 16th and 17th centuries. At Moon Bastion, illustrations and models depict events and incidents connected with Galle Fort, from prehistory to the end of the colonial era in the 20th century. The periods covered make the two occupations comparable, while setting them against the broader historical scope of the presentation at Moon Bastion.

Blue whales, Bryde’s whales, sperm whales, fin whales and several dolphin species can be observed 8 to 10 nautical miles off the coast, in front of Mirissa Harbour; the distribution of marine animals varies by season. Yala National Park is located in the Southern Province and Uva Province. Its ecosystems range from moist monsoon forests to freshwater and marine wetlands; the park is home to 215 bird species, including six species endemic to Sri Lanka.
