If you are considering Minneriya as a destination for a hotel stay, nature and history offer distinct points of interest. The area is associated with Minneriya Lake and a wildlife sanctuary for safari visits and elephants. Nearby is Minneriya National Park, which covers 8,890 hectares and lies between Habarana and Polonnaruwa. Its connection to King Mahasen adds a historical perspective to the natural setting. Depending on your interests, you can focus primarily on seasonal wildlife viewing or cultural history.

Natural surroundings of Minneriya

Minneriya National Park protects the catchment areas of three ancient irrigation reservoirs, including Minneriya Tank. Its vegetation consists mainly of dry mixed evergreen tropical forest. There are also strips of riverine forest, scrubland, native bamboo and grassland. The park’s landscape therefore ranges from forest and riverside vegetation to scrubland and grassland. A catchment area is the land from which water flows into a reservoir. Protecting these areas adds a perspective on the park’s waterscape to wildlife viewing.

Elephants and birds throughout the year

The dry season is a particular point of interest for elephants: during this time, animals gather in the park and feed along the reservoir’s shores. Visitors may sometimes see hundreds of elephants there. A visit is also considered worthwhile outside the months when they gather. The vegetation and topography allow for good mammal viewing; elephants remain a major attraction year-round, though their numbers are not constant.

Birds provide another seasonal highlight. More than 170 bird species have been recorded in the park. In winter, migratory birds such as Wood Sandpiper, Common Sandpiper and Kentish Plover can be seen at the reservoir. For planning when to visit, there are therefore two distinct wildlife-viewing highlights: the elephant gathering during the dry season and the migratory birds mentioned above during the winter months.

Historical connections to King Mahasen

Cultural history is another point of interest in Minneriya. The construction of Minneriya Lake is attributed to King Mahasen. According to historical tradition, Minneriya Devale was built in 327 AD in honour of the same king; Mahasen was known as “Minneriya Deviyo.” The lake and the Devale connect the area with him in different ways: the lake is associated with his construction of it, while the Devale was dedicated to him. These specific historical connections complement an interest in the landscape and wildlife.
