Nawalapitiya: Mahaweli, Railway Line and Waterfalls
Accommodation in Nawalapitiya
Nawalapitiya on the Mahaweli
The Mahaweli flows through Nawalapitiya, giving the town a distinct riverside setting. This provides a direct geographical point of reference for understanding the destination: the river is part of the town itself, while waterfalls in the nearby area should be considered separately. The railway line and the traditional interpretations of the town’s name add to this picture, each from a different perspective. If you are planning a trip to Nawalapitiya, this helps distinguish the town’s features, regional natural attractions and cultural traditions.
Interpretations of the name: between the river and Nā trees
Two different explanations of the name Nawalapitiya have been handed down. One common interpretation traces it to a pool in the Mahaweli. According to the story, pilgrims on their way to Sri Pada bathed in the pool to ease their exhaustion. This interpretation thus links the river to a pilgrimage and the purpose of bathing; it should be understood as a common explanation, not as a confirmed etymology. An alternative view derives the name from the Nā trees found throughout the area. This second explanation takes a different angle, linking the name to Nā trees rather than to water and pilgrims.
Railway connection to the Main Line
Nawalapitiya railway station is on Sri Lanka’s Main Line, at a stated distance of 141.522 km from Fort. The line designation locates the station on the railway route, while Fort is the reference point for the distance. The distance in kilometres is not a travel time and does not specify any departures. So if you are including a train journey in your travel plans, check the current timetable separately. This keeps the distance as a geographical reference point rather than a statement about journey duration or specific train connections.
Waterfalls in the nearby area
Two waterfalls in the nearby area can be distinguished by their different features. Kadiyanlena Falls is in the village of Kadiyanlena, about 11 km from Nawalapitiya, and therefore outside the town. The waterfall has three sections, with several pools below the individual sections. At Kadiyanlena, the focus is on its tiered form and pools. Galaboda Waterfall is between Nawalapitiya and Watawala and is about 30 m high. Its location between the two places and its approximate height are different key details from the sections and pools at Kadiyanlena. So, if you compare the waterfalls by their landscape features, the differences are specific: a three-section formation with pools on the one hand, and a height and location between two places on the other. Their geographical settings also differ: Kadiyanlena is located by reference to a named village and its distance from Nawalapitiya; Galaboda by its position between two places.
