The sites differ in theme and location, so you can make cultural history, nature, and seasonal hikes a focused part of your travel plans.

Cultural history: poetry and the Donghak Peasant Revolution

Jeongeupsa Culture Park in the center of Jeongeup-si was built in honor of “Jeongeupsa,” a Baekje-Gayo poem from the Baekje period. It is the only one of the five Baekje-Gayo poems recorded in Hangeul to have survived to this day. Another historical landmark is the Donghak Peasant Revolution National Memorial Park in Jeongeup-si. It is located on the Hwangtohyeon battlefield, where the Donghak Peasant Army won its first victory over government forces. One site thus leads to literary history, while the other tells the story of the Donghak Peasant Revolution.

Naejangsan: hiking routes and views

Naejangsan Mountain is about 11 kilometers from the center of Jeongeup. More than ten hiking routes, ranging from 1.5 to 14 kilometers, provide a concrete guide if you want to plan your hikes by distance. Conditions on individual routes may change. For a different perspective, the Naejangsan Cable Car offers views across the entire park. Check current operating conditions before your visit. From the upper station, a 300-meter walking path leads to the observatory on Yeonjabong Peak. These details describe different planning points: route length for the hikes, and the path from the upper station for the observatory.

Maples and wildflowers in the parks

Naejangsan Maple Ecology Park, near Jaejangho Lake in Jeongeup, is home to eleven native maple species. The park also features a Maple Experience Exhibition Center, various gardens, and maple tunnel paths. The focus here is on the maple collection and landscaped garden areas; in contrast, Naejangsan’s hiking routes can be considered by their individual lengths.

Another natural highlight is Jeongeup Gujeolcho Local Garden in Sannae-myeon. Large numbers of Gujeolcho and other wildflowers grow there. The garden was designated Jeonbuk’s first Local Garden. The two parks therefore have distinct themes: Naejangsan Maple Ecology Park brings together native maple species, gardens, and tunnel paths, while the Gujeolcho garden is characterized by its abundance of wildflowers.

Local themes: music and tea

At Naejangsan Water Park, the Naejangsan Cultural Tourism Musical Fountain features more than 110 songs, including children’s songs, pop hits, and film music. The performance program may change. Jeongeup-Ssanghwacha is listed as the first of Jeongeup’s three culinary specialties. Jeongeup Ssanghwacha Street is in the center, where cafés typically serve traditional Korean desserts such as Garaetteok and Nurungji with herbal tea. If you would like to try the tea, check the current offerings at individual cafés, as menus may change.

Train travel and an autumn visit

Jeongeup Station is an important stop on the Honam Line. It is especially well known in autumn, when many hikers travel from there to Naejangsan to see the colorful fall foliage. This seasonal connection may be useful when planning your trip; train schedules can change, so it is worth checking the latest times before you travel.
