Discover Sangju-si
Accommodation in Sangju-si
In Sangju-si, historic architecture, temple traditions and market life come together. Taepyeongseongdae-Gyeongsang-Gamyeong Park combines a reconstructed Gyeongsang-Gamyeong with traditional hanok buildings; Namjangsa represents temple history and preserved Buddhist art. The Sangju Central Market adds recurring market days to these themes. For planning your trip, it is helpful to note the difference: the park and temple offer distinct thematic experiences, while the market also follows a regular calendar schedule.
Historic Gamyeong and Hanok in the Park
Taepyeongseongdae-Gyeongsang-Gamyeong Park was completed in May 2020. It covers 65,114 m² and includes 18 traditional hanok buildings, including Cheongyudang and Jegeumdang. The park features a reconstruction of the historic Gyeongsang-Gamyeong, regarded as a historic symbol of Sangju’s traditions and cultural heritage. The area and number of buildings describe different aspects of the site: its extent and the size of the traditional hanok group. The Gamyeong Iyagi-gil history trail presents the park’s history, complementing the historical reconstruction with the story of the site itself. May 2020 refers to the park’s completion; the Gamyeong is the historical model for the reconstruction. The site also includes a rest area, parking for 106 vehicles and toilets. Cheongyudang and Jegeumdang provide two specific architectural points of reference. The area is equivalent to about 6.5 hectares, which gives a clearer sense of its scale.
Temple Traditions and Art at Namjangsa
Namjangsa is a traditional temple of the Jogye Order in Namjang-dong, Sangju-si, and is one of Sangju’s four historic temples. Bukjangsa and Gapsangsa remain, while Seungjangsa no longer exists. The Gwaneum Seonwon was established within Namjangsa in 1797. It houses a carved wooden Buddhist hanging scroll painting, considered the oldest of its kind in Korea and designated Treasure No. 923. The year refers to the Gwaneum Seonwon; Treasure No. 923 is the painting’s designation. Namjangsa is notable both for its place among Sangju’s historic temples and for a specific cultural treasure preserved there. This distinguishes the temple from the park: the park centers on a historical reconstruction, while Namjangsa is a temple that preserves a work of art.
Market Days at Sangju Central Market
Sangju Central Market holds a recurring five-day market on the 2nd and 7th of each month. On these market days, the entire street is used as an area for street stalls. If you would like to plan your trip around the market, you can time your visit to coincide with these dates. This makes it possible to plan for the market not only by its theme but also by its calendar schedule.
