Discover Chuncheon
Accommodation in Chuncheon
Chuncheon offers different ways to experience its landscape, leisure activities, and food culture: cable cars and observation structures offer a different perspective from a rail-bike and train ride, gardens, or museums. When planning your trip, it helps to distinguish between these themes and prioritize them according to your interests.
Cable Car, Skywalks, and Bridges
Within the city, the Samaksan Lake Cable Car connects Samcheondong to Samaksan across Uiam Lake. The route is 3.61 kilometers long; the installation is designed in the shape of an arch and a boomerang. A distinctive feature of the crystal cabin is its transparent floor, through which Uiam Lake is clearly visible. From the cable car's observation point, a connected walking path leads to a skywalk observation platform in about ten minutes.
The Soyanggang Skywalk is a separate attraction. It is 174 meters long and extends over the river; 156 meters of it have a transparent floor made of reinforced glass. At the end are a circular plaza and an observation platform, known for panoramic views, especially at sunset. Chuncheon Sairo 248, meanwhile, is a suspension bridge exclusively for pedestrians. It connects Gongjicheon-Uiam Park with the reservoir in Geunhwa-dong.
Through the Landscape by Rail Bike
The Gangchon Rail Park course begins at Gimyujeong Station and is 8.5 kilometers long in total. Of this, 6 kilometers are by rail bike and 2.5 kilometers by train. Most of the route is downhill, with views of mountains, fields, and a river along the way. The rail-bike ride also passes through tunnels with different themes and offers views of the Bukhangang River. Both the division of the route and its scenery are key features.
Gangchon Rail Park also offers a VR rail-bike service. The city of Chuncheon describes it as the first of its kind in South Korea. This distinction should be considered separately from the route details: it describes the VR offering, while the kilometer breakdown explains the course.
Gardens and Exhibitions
Jade Garden makes use of natural valley terrain and arranges its planting, architecture, and buildings in a European style. The approximately 160,000-square-meter grounds include 24 themed areas, including a dry garden, a wedding garden, a moss garden, and a rhododendron garden. The plant collection includes rhododendrons, maple varieties, irises, and blueberries. Visitors can take in both individual garden areas and the design of the grounds as a whole.
The Animation Museum presents the history and production processes of animation and offers hands-on activities. The Toy Robot Hall brings together robots, toys, and IT technology in a playful exploration of the future of robotics. Visitors can control robots and try out AR robots and metaverse experiences. The grounds shared by the Animation Museum and Toy Robot Hall also include an outdoor character park and a lawn with a view of the lake. The two venues have different focuses: animation and its production in one, and robots and digital experiences in the other.
An interactive exhibition at the Chuncheon National Museum explores the theme of “Children and Nature,” combining play with movement, emotions, and communication. Before your visit, check with the museum to see whether this offering is currently part of the program.
Gongjicheon Sculpture Park covers 26,928 square meters and permanently displays works by well-known artists. Its permanent presentation of artworks offers a different focus from the interactive museum experiences.
Chuncheon's Cuisine in the Central Shopping District
Chuncheon Myeongdong Street is a busy central shopping street. Chuncheon Myeongdong Dakgalbi Alley is located there, with restaurants serving dakgalbi and makguksu lined up along it. Dakgalbi is considered a regional dish of Chuncheon: chicken is marinated in seasoned gochujang paste, then stir-fried with finely sliced cabbage and other vegetables in a hot, oiled pan. Both the named alley and the method of preparation therefore offer concrete pointers for planning a food-focused trip.
