Chungcheongbuk-Do: Between River Landscapes and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Chungcheongbuk-Do
Chungcheongbuk-Do is an inland region in the center of the Korean Peninsula, in South Korea. River landscapes, Buddhist heritage, hiking trails, and regional specialties give a trip here several distinct points of focus. You can plan your choices around whether you want to prioritize striking landscapes, cultural heritage sites, outdoor activities, or regional cuisine.
River Landscapes and Seasonal Colors
The three peaks of Dodamsambong rise in the middle of the Namhangang River, framed by the distant Sobaeksan Mountain. The hexagonal Samdojeong Pavilion stands on the middle peak. Rocks, river, and mountain scenery come together to define the landscape here. At Mungwang Reservoir in Goesan-gun, the scenery is different: tall ginkgo trees line the entrance and surround the water. Their golden canopy is especially striking in autumn.
Buddhist Heritage and Cultural Treasures
Beopjusa in Songnisan-myeon, Boeun-gun, is one of the seven Buddhist mountain monasteries that make up Sansa, a UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 2018. Those interested in religious and cultural sites will also find a variety of cultural treasures at the Cheongpung Cultural Heritage Complex in Jecheon-si.
The complex includes Hanbyeongnu Pavilion and a standing stone Buddha, both designated as Treasures, as well as Paryeongnu Pavilion, Geumnamnu Pavilion, Geumbyeongheon Hall, Eungcheonggak Pavilion, and the local Confucian school, Cheongpunghyanggyo. It also contains nearly 2,000 household artifacts. The collection thus ranges from named buildings and religious objects to items from everyday domestic life.
Songnisan Theme Park in Songnisan-myeon, Boeun-gun, is a nature-focused tourism complex designed for overnight stays. Its forest recreation facilities include zip lines and monorails. This gives it a different focus from the cultural heritage sites: here, the forest setting and recreational activities take center stage.
Trails, Heights, and Views
The Danyanggang Jando Trail in Jeokseong-myeon, Danyang-gun, is a 1.2-kilometer hiking trail along the Namhangang River. Also in Jeokseong-myeon, the Mancheonha Skywalk stands 80 to 90 meters above the river’s surface. For another perspective on the landscape, the Cheongpung Cable Car travels 2.7 kilometers from Multaeri Station to the summit of Bibongsan Mountain and back. The summit is 531 meters above sea level, and from there the panoramic view extends over Cheongpungho Lake.
Danyang-gun also offers opportunities for paragliding and hang gliding. Danyang Paravillage in Gagok-myeon offers paragliding; its takeoff and landing zones are operated exclusively by the company. Conditions may change with the weather. Yangbangsan Paragliding Site offers panoramic views of Danyang and the winding Namhangang River and is used by tourists and extreme-sports enthusiasts for hang gliding and paragliding. Together, these places connect the theme of river landscapes with a range of activities and viewpoints.
Regional Specialties
In Boeun-eup, Boeun-gun, Joeunga specializes in jujube desserts made with the company’s distinctive jujube paste. Since producers and product availability may change, it is advisable to check what is on offer before visiting. Chungju-si is known for traditional Korean confections made with apples—another regional specialty, distinct from the jujube desserts.
Yeongdong is Korea’s largest grape producer; production rankings may change over time. The Yeongdong Wine Tunnel in Yeongdong-eup, Yeongdong-gun, is 420 meters long and located within the Rainbow Healing Tourist Site. Its attractions include a Wine Culture Hall covering the history of wine, a Yeongdong Wine Hall featuring wine produced in Yeongdong, and a military magazine dating from the Japanese occupation. Here, wine, regional production, and a historic building come together in one visitor destination.
