Arar brings together the history of the Northern Borders Region, collections on the city’s history and distinctive local cuisine. The state-run Northern Borders Museum, Zuhaya Al-Anzi’s Heritage Museum and several dishes typical of Arar give the city’s cultural profile a concrete character. If you are looking for a hotel in Arar, these themes can help you decide whether the city suits your travel interests.

History in Two Museums

The state-run Northern Borders Museum in Arar was established in 2007 to preserve and document the antiquities and heritage of the Northern Borders Region. It is overseen by the Ministry of Tourism. Its six exhibition halls cover different historical periods. The combination of its preservation mission and galleries arranged by period makes the museum a useful reference point for travelers interested in the region’s history.

Zuhaya Al-Anzi established her Heritage Museum in part of her home in the Al-Faisaliyah district of Arar. It includes archaeological collections and traditional handicrafts that document Arar’s history. The collection includes old copper household items, old coffee pots, as well as Sadu and Natu. The museum also has a bridal chamber, a makeup room and a room for traditional northern Arabian clothing. The collection thus ranges from everyday items and handicrafts to rooms with specific purposes.

If you are considering visiting either museum, check the current visiting arrangements in advance.

Dishes and Cultural Presentations

Dishes characteristic of Arar include مليحية، خميعة، فتيتة and محموسة. They complement the museums’ historical perspective with a culinary point of reference: the city’s cultural character is shaped by both its collections and its local cuisine.

At one edition of the “Summer Is Tourism” festival in Arar’s popular market, heritage stalls showcased the region’s folk heritage and cultural identity. They featured handicrafts, traditional products and cultural artifacts. Traditional foods were also served, introducing visitors to local dishes. This edition of the festival brought together displays of crafts and cultural artifacts with an introduction to local cuisine.

Al-Hudud Asch-Schamaliyya as a Regional Setting

Within the broader destination of Al-Hudud Asch-Schamaliyya, the Northern Borders Region includes Ar'ar Valley, Al-Owaisi Valley, Badanah Valley and Kutayfah Mountain; it is also known for its meadows. These landscape features broaden the picture of the wider destination to include valleys, a mountain and meadows, forming a different theme from Arar’s museums and cuisine.

The archaeological site of Dughra Palace is also part of the regional context. It includes a large lake, volcanic rocks, stone circles and stone tools lying on the surface. The lake, rock formations and archaeological features give this site a different character from the collections on the city’s and region’s history.

King Abdulaziz Palace in Linah is also part of the regional historical setting. It was King Abdulaziz’s only residence in the Northern Borders Region and served as the seat of the regional emirate.
