Mecca brings together religious history, sites on Jabal Hira and Jabal Thawr, and museums that explore local heritage and historical accounts. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between the religious and historical focus of Hira, the exhibitions in the Hira Cultural District, and the challenging climb to the Cave of Thawr.

Hira: Religious History and Cultural District

The Prophet Muhammad retreated to Hira for worship before the first revelation. When he was forty years old, Gabriel conveyed to him the first verses of Surah al-ʿAlaq. The Cave of Hira lies near the summit of Jabal Hira, on its southwestern side. Its rock crevice is about three metres long and between 1.5 and two metres wide.

The Hira Cultural District is a cultural tourism destination visited by many people throughout the year, and covers more than 67,000 square metres. Its facilities include exhibition halls and interactive exhibits. In 2024, a new trail was prepared from the cultural district at the foot of Jabal Hira to a point a few metres below the summit. Safety measures and lighting were installed along both sides. Check the trail’s current accessibility before visiting.

The Climb to the Cave of Thawr

The route to the Cave of Thawr starts on the northern side of Jabal Thawr. The climb is described as easy at first, then difficult and strenuous. Narrow paths, high rocks and numerous switchbacks mark the route. Jabal Thawr rises 754 metres above sea level; the cave and mountain therefore form a distinct focus in addition to Hira.

The route also has a long history: at the beginning of the 14th century of the Islamic calendar, some governors had the route made easier and marked so travellers would not get lost in the mountain ravines. This historical account is not a substitute for assessing current trail conditions. Check current accessibility and conditions on site before setting out.

Museums with Different Areas of Focus

The Abu Bakr Al-Amoudi Museum has a dedicated area on the Sanctuary of Mecca and the holy sites. Photographs and documents more than 100 years old are displayed there. The Beit Al-Aseel Museum focuses on aspects of traditional life in Mecca and the preservation of local folk heritage. The two museums therefore offer different perspectives: historical accounts at one, everyday life and heritage at the other.

The Clock Tower Museum has interactive areas for children, where they can learn the basics of time, stars and planets. Together with the exhibitions in the Hira Cultural District, the museums offer further perspectives on history, culture and the natural sciences.
