In Medina, archaeological history, distinctive rock formations and the cultural landscape of an oasis come together. Hegra and Dadan offer glimpses into different chapters of the past; Elephant Rock and the AlUla Oasis reveal another side of the trip.

Archaeological Sites and Built Heritage

Hegra is Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site. More than 110 well-preserved tombs have been carved out of desert rock. The rock architecture gives the site its distinctive character and makes it a striking destination for travelers interested in archaeological heritage.

Dadan offers another perspective on the past: more than 2,000 years ago, it was the capital of the kingdoms of Dadan and Lihyan. Dadan was also once an important hub on the Incense Route. Jabal Ikmah contains hundreds of detailed inscriptions carved into rock faces and boulders. Due to its historical significance, the site was included in UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register.

AlUla Old Town also tells the story of past ways of life and travel. The quarter features a maze of historic alleyways and hundreds of mud-brick houses. As a settlement, it was once an important stop on the pilgrimage route from Damascus to Mecca. Hegra, Dadan, Jabal Ikmah and the Old Town thus offer different ways to explore the past: from tombs carved into rock and inscriptions to alleyways and mud-brick architecture.

For culture enthusiasts, contemporary venues are also part of the destination’s appeal. Maraya is the world’s largest mirrored building and a versatile venue for concerts, events and conferences. Cinema AlJadidah is an open-air cinema featuring curated screenings of arthouse films, documentaries and regional stories. Both venues offer a different focus from the archaeological sites: here, events and film take center stage.

Rock Landscapes and the AlUla Oasis

Elephant Rock is a natural sandstone formation eroded over millions of years by rain, wind and sand. At its highest point, it reaches 52 meters. The rock tells a different story from Hegra: there, stone was shaped to create tombs; here, natural processes formed the landscape. At sunset, Elephant Rock offers a sociable place to enjoy food from the SALT food truck and fire pits beneath the starry sky.

The Sharaan Nature Reserve covers 1,500 square kilometers and protects endangered animals, including Arabian wolves, gazelles and fennec foxes. Harrat Viewpoint is located at the summit of a volcano. These places give the trip a focus on landscapes and nature, while the historical sites tell more of a story about structures, inscriptions and routes of the past.

The AlUla Oasis is shaped by another landscape feature: the shade of 2.3 million date palms enables 200,000 citrus trees to bear fruit. These include oranges, grapefruits, lemons and kumquats. The date palm groves produce more than 90,000 tons of dates each year. Date palms and citrus trees do not simply grow side by side here; the palms’ shade supports the citrus trees’ growth. The oasis can therefore be understood both through its agriculture and through the way its plants interact.

Plan Your Stay Around Your Interests

When choosing a hotel, you can start by organizing your trip around your interests: archaeological sites and historic architecture, rock landscapes and nature conservation, or oasis culture each offer a different focus. Maraya and Cinema AlJadidah add event and film venues to the mix.
