Negros Oriental brings together lush vegetation, impressive mountains, and appealing dive sites. Dumaguete City serves as a starting point for various popular destinations in the province. For your stay, it is worth planning your trip around the experiences that interest you most: coral reefs and marine life, forests and mountains, waterfalls, or culture. This selection can also help you decide what to prioritize when choosing a hotel location.

Coral Reefs, Dive Sites, and Coastal Experiences

Off the coast of Dauin lies Apo Island, a marine ecotourism destination recognized for its coral reefs, rich marine life, and community-based marine conservation. Snorkeling and diving are among the experiences on the island: underwater, you can find more than 400 coral species, sea turtles, colorful reef fish, and large schools of trevally. Apo Island thus brings together marine life and community-based conservation.

Dauin offers a different diving focus, with exceptional muck diving and abundant marine life. The Bio-os Takot Diot Marine Sanctuary in Amlan is also a dive site. The Bais Dolphin Watching and Manjuyod White Sandbar Experience Package offers an experience combining wildlife watching and coastal scenery. The dolphin-watching experience begins with a boat ride in the Tañon Strait, where dolphins can be observed in their natural habitat. These experiences therefore differ in focus: reefs and marine life, muck diving, or watching dolphins from a boat.

Crater Lakes, Mountain Forests, and Waterfalls

The Twin Lakes Balinsasayao and Danao Natural Park in Sibulan is the 59th ASEAN Heritage Park. Its two crater lakes are surrounded by lush rainforest and abundant wildlife. The combination of lakes, forest, and biodiversity gives the park a natural setting distinct from the coastal dive sites.

Mt. Talinis, also called Cuernos de Negros, offers a popular two-day trek with an overnight stay through lush jungle and mossy forests. Lake Nailig also offers a scenic camping experience along the Mt. Talinis trail. Casaroro Falls, meanwhile, plunges about 100 feet into a natural pool, surrounded by tropical forests and towering rock cliffs. The waterfall can be reached via a scenic hike and a descent down stairs; conditions may vary seasonally.

The history of conservation is another facet of the landscape. During the term of Governor Hon. Emilio Macias II, the provincial government in Negros Oriental pursued a conservation and development project at Balanan Lake. It promoted the lake as an ecotourism destination while also aiming to protect it from activities by locals and tourists that could harm it.

Festival and Local Market

The Buglasan Festival is a week-long celebration of the culture, heritage, and community spirit of Negros Oriental. Specific dates and programs vary from year to year; if you want the festival to be part of your trip, check the dates for the relevant year.

Malatapay Market is located in Maluay, Zamboanguita, and is usually held on Wednesdays. It offers fresh produce, everyday items, snacks, and local finds. As the weekly schedule matters when planning a visit, confirm the date locally.

Plan Experiences into Your Trip

The two-day Mt. Talinis trek with an overnight stay takes a different amount of time than a market visit, which usually falls on a weekday, or the week-long Buglasan Festival. When planning these experiences, consider both the length of the trek and the festival dates, which vary each year, as well as market day.
