Calape offers cultural and scenic points of reference for planning a trip: the annual Pahinungod sa Calape festival, St. Vincent Ferrer Church, and island, reef and coastal themes. Pangangan, Mantatao and The Red Land of Sohoton represent different geographical features. These themes differ depending on whether you are looking for a specific date, a historical connection, or a nature and coastal connection.

Festival Culture and History

The annual Pahinungod sa Calape festival is celebrated on May 10. The 2025 tourism profile lists street parades with dancing, festival processions, a singing competition, a Karo-mugna competition and concerts as highlights. If you want to plan your trip around an upcoming edition, check the date and program in advance.

St. Vincent Ferrer Church was elevated to parish status in the municipality of Calape in 1802. This date gives the municipality a clear historical connection and complements the annual festival with a different time horizon: one is a singular historical development, while the other is a recurring celebration.

Islands, Reef and Coast

Pangangan Island is accessible via a causeway and has white-sand beaches suitable for snorkeling and diving. There are several dive sites along the rocky coast; the reef surrounding the island is called Pangangan Wall. For orientation, it is helpful to distinguish between the details: the activities relate to the sandy beaches, while the specific dive sites are along the rocky coast. The name Pangangan Wall refers to the island reef, not to a single dive site. Activity availability may vary locally. Check current access conditions before setting out.

On December 29, 1981, Pangangan Island was declared a Mangrove Swamp Forest Reserve under Presidential Proclamation No. 2152. This protected-area designation is another historically dated reference to the island, separate from the descriptions of beach activities and dive sites.

Mantatao is a small island barangay in the municipality of Calape, located within the Danajon Bank reef. Compared with Pangangan, with its beaches, rocky coast and dive sites, Mantatao centers on its position as an island barangay within the reef. This gives the municipality a second, distinct reef-related feature.

The Red Land of Sohoton in Calape is a landscape of red earth and wide views of mountains and sea. The red earth and wide views of mountains and sea distinguish this landscape from Pangangan’s beaches and Mantatao’s position within the reef.

Getting Oriented at Pangangan Causeway

At Kinubkoban, the midpoint of Pangangan Causeway, there is a fishing port, a public toilet, a Bantay-Dagat office and two publicly accessible beach shelters. The midpoint is therefore not just a geographic location, but also a place with specific visitor facilities. If you plan to rely on any of these facilities, check their current availability in advance.
