Boljoon: Heritage, Island Views and Waterfalls
Accommodation in Boljoon
If you’re looking for a hotel in Boljoon, you can plan your trip around the area’s themes: church and local history, an annual fiesta, a local cake specialty, as well as viewpoints and waterfalls appeal to different interests.
Church, Fiesta and Local Specialties
The Patrocinio de Maria Church, also called Boljoon Church, is one of the oldest Augustinian churches on Cebu. In 2001, the National Museum of the Philippines declared the church a National Cultural Treasure because of its outstanding historical, cultural and architectural value. It is one of 26 Spanish colonial church buildings to receive this distinction. Its age and the award highlight different aspects: the first places the church in its historical context, while the second recognizes its value to history, culture and architecture.
The church and convent complex also includes remains of fortified walls, a cemetery and a blockhouse. If your focus is religious heritage, you can consider these features together with the church as parts of the same ensemble. This means the named complex includes more than just the church building.
Every October, Boljoon celebrates the Fiesta of Our Lady of the Patronage. It includes religious processions, cultural performances and community activities. The celebration brings together religious and cultural events.
Torta is also one of Boljoon’s local specialties. This rich, dense sponge cake is traditionally made with tuba, a coconut wine, instead of yeast. This gives Boljoon a culinary point of interest for trip planning, alongside its church heritage and fiesta.
Views, Rock and Waterfalls
Ablayan Peak is in Barangay Upper Becerril in Boljoon. A 2016 report described a 360-degree view from there of the neighboring islands of Bohol, Negros and Siquijor. These three names give the view a specific reference: you can associate the peak with island views if landscapes shape your travel plans.
A 2016 report described Ili Rock as a viewpoint overlooking the sea, surrounding islands, mountains and the town of Boljoon. By comparison, the view description for Ablayan Peak specifically names Bohol, Negros and Siquijor; the view from Ili Rock also includes the sea, mountains and town. The report also said that Ili Rock had been modified to stop rocks from falling during landslides. The work prompted protests. The rock is thus associated with a view and a historical intervention that drew protests at the time.
A concrete staircase with 136 steps leads up the mountain at Ili Rock. If you’d like to include these stairs in your plans, check current access before your visit.
Dayhag Falls has several tiers of cascades, and the trail to the higher tiers becomes increasingly challenging. Unlike the viewpoints, a visit here also involves deciding how far up you plan to go. If you’re considering the higher cascades, factor in the increased difficulty and check local conditions in advance.
A 2024 article described bamboo and nipa rest huts in the area around Dayhag Falls. If you’d like to plan a stop at one, check its current availability in advance.
