Surigao City can be explored through a range of interests: coastal landscapes, mangroves, a cave, historic memorial sites and events. When planning your trip, it is worth considering each destination according to its particular focus. This can help you decide whether nature, culture or a specific festival month is especially important to your stay.

Beaches, Mangroves and a Cave

The scenery at Mabua Pebble Beach includes native huts, hills dotted with coconut palms and deep, cool waters. The beach is described as a place for swimming, windsurfing and jet skiing. Before planning, check whether the activity you have in mind is offered at the time of your visit.

The three Pebble Beaches each have a different focus: Mabua is associated with water activities, Ipil Pebble Beach is surrounded by greenery, and Looc Pebble Beach is suited to sightseeing and relaxation. These differences can help you choose based on what interests you most, rather than treating the places as interchangeable beach destinations.

Mapawa Cave offers a different natural feature: small entrances lead into spacious chambers. The contrast between the small entrances and the expansive interiors is the cave’s defining characteristic. This makes Mapawa quite different from the beach landscapes described above.

At Day-asan Mangrove Forest and Water Village, houses stand on stilts, and paddleboats travel through the mangrove waterways. The stilt houses and waterways connect the built environment with the mangrove landscape. Together with the beaches and cave, this offers a selection of different nature and landscape themes, without requiring these destinations to be part of a fixed itinerary.

Memorial Sites and Religious Significance

The First Philippine Flag Hoisting Marker commemorates the first flag-raising in Mindanao. The Battle of Surigao Strait Memorial and Museum in Barangay Punta Bilar is dedicated to those who fought in the naval battle. Both sites focus on remembrance, but they relate to different historical events.

The Cathedral of San Nicolas de Tolentino in Barangay Washington is regarded as a spiritual center with deep Catholic roots. The Surigao River in Barangay Sabang offers another historical perspective: it formerly served as a transport route. The themes therefore range from remembrance and religious significance to the river’s former use.

Festivals and Their Listed Months

The Bonok-Bonok Maradjaw Karadjaw Festival features Mamanwa dances in a street parade and a fiesta in honor of San Nicolas de Tolentino. September is listed as its month. Sakay-Sakay Abayan is associated with June, and Suroy sa Surigao with the period from February to May. These dates distinguish the events across the year, but do not, by themselves, establish a date for any given year.

The Tilaw Food Festival is also listed for September and celebrates local food. If you want to plan a trip around a festival, check the current dates and program for the relevant year in advance. This lets you take the listed months into account without treating them as confirmed event dates.
