Rizal brings together archaeological rock art, historic sites, waterfalls and forested mountains. Hiking, camping and trekking are also possible activities. To plan your trip, you can first decide whether cultural history, scenery or outdoor activities should be the focus.

Cultural history in rocks and caves

Among the notable cultural sites are the Angono-Binangonan Petroglyphs. They are engraved in a rock shelter on the boundary between the municipalities of Angono and Binangonan in Rizal Province. The figures are zoomorphic, or animal-shaped, and geometric. A total of 179 distinct figures have been discovered there. In 1973, the petroglyphs were declared a National Cultural Treasure. Their specific location, varied forms and designation make them a special point of interest for travelers interested in archaeological evidence.

Caves also reflect the province’s history. In Tanay, Calinawan Cave was the setting for an event in which Filipino Katipuneros decided to rebel against Spanish rule. At Pamitinan Cave in Rodriguez, Andres Bonifacio and seven Katipuneros made a pilgrimage during Holy Week in 1895 and pledged themselves to freedom. The two places therefore represent different historical connections: resistance to Spanish rule and a specific pact for freedom.

Landscapes and outdoor activities

The landscape also takes various forms. Daranak Falls in Tanay lies at the foot of the Tanay mountain range. Montalban Gorge in Rodriguez is a 1,180-foot-high water gorge between Mounts Pamitinan and Binicayan. In the higher-altitude area of Baras is the Masungi Georeserve, a protected area with karst limestone formations and forested mountains. Talim Island is part of Rizal Province and is divided between the municipalities of Binangonan and Cardona.

Mt. Irid Satellite City (MISTY) in Rodriguez is suitable for hiking, camping and trekking. Mt. Pamitinan, also in Rodriguez, has a developed hiking trail; the climb takes approximately 1.5 to 2.5 hours. A natural attraction in Sitio Payaran, Barangay Mascap, Rodriguez, consists of seven cascading waterfalls. The Pililla Wind Farms in Pililla comprise 27 wind turbines; the number may change if the project is expanded. They attract visitors who want to experience the wind turbines up close. As access conditions may change, check them before visiting.

Hotel location and orientation

When choosing a hotel location in Rizal, it is best to plan around the places you want to visit. Cultural sites are located, among other places, near Angono and Binangonan, as well as in Tanay and Rodriguez; landscape and outdoor experiences can be found in Baras, Tanay, Rodriguez and Pililla, for example. The Manila East Road to Pililla passes through Cainta, Antipolo City, Teresa, Morong, Baras and Tanay before reaching Rizal’s lakeside towns. This route provides a point of reference along the road. For your specific journey, take current road and traffic conditions into account.

Local food culture can also be part of your trip: the Kakanin Festival in San Mateo is a parade of rice-based specialties accompanied by traditional dances. The festival brings food and dance together in a distinctive cultural experience. If you plan to attend, check the event dates in advance.
