Gujrat offers different ways to explore history and landscape, including buildings with distinctive architectural influences, shrines and historic sites, as well as Pabbi and Rasul Reserve Forest. For planning your trip, it helps to consider these themes separately. That way, you can decide whether you want to focus mainly on architecture, include religious places of remembrance, or put the natural landscape at the centre of your visit.

Architecture across styles and eras

Ram Pyari Mahal is a pre-partition building in Gujrat that combines Greek and Roman architectural orders. This combination gives the building a clear architectural focus: two different traditions come together in one structure. The Baradari is attached to the shrine of Hafiz Muhammad Hayat. It was built during Jahangir’s reign and probably dates from the same period as the neighbouring mosque. The Baradari thus brings together two historical points of reference: Jahangir’s reign and its tentative chronological connection to the mosque. Together, the two buildings invite you to consider both their architecture and their respective historical context.

Historic sites and shrines in the district

Historic sites in Gujrat District include the Four Main Gates of Old Gujrat and Akbari Hammam (Akbar’s Bath). There are also several religious places of remembrance. Darbar Hazrat Nausha Gunj Bakhsh in Ranmal Sharif is one of the district’s shrines or tombs. Sain Karam Ellahi Kanwan Wali Sarkar, Hadhrat Shah Hussain Multani and Darbar Barilla Sharif-Gujrat are also among Gujrat’s shrines and tombs. This selection shows that the district’s historic heritage is not limited to individual buildings, but also encompasses different places of remembrance.

The shrine of Hazrat Shah Daula Daryai is protected under the Punjab Special Premises (Preservation) Ordinance of 1985. Mela Shah Jahangir is held in Gujrat every year to commemorate Jahangir’s death. If you would like to include the festival in your travel plans, check the specific dates in advance. It is also advisable to check current access arrangements before visiting individual historic sites or the forest area.

Landscape in Pabbi and Rasul Reserve Forest

Pabbi and Rasul Reserve Forest offers another perspective on the district. Within the district, the protected area extends across the tehsils of Kharian and Sarai Alamgir. The entire area covers 36,374 acres and spans several districts, so this figure does not refer solely to the portion within Gujrat. This distinction is useful when considering the forest as a regional landscape: the named tehsils describe its extent within the district, while the total area relates to the wider region.

Other architectural landmarks in Punjab

Elsewhere in Punjab, there are distinctive historic destinations that do not belong to Gujrat District. Noor Mahal is an Italian-inspired royal palace built in 1872 by Nawab Sadiq Muhammad Khan IV. In Lahore, Jahangir’s Tomb lies in a garden on the right bank of the Ravi in Shahdara, on the northwestern outskirts of the city. Anarkali’s Tomb is located on the grounds of the Civil Secretariat in Lahore and is considered one of the earliest surviving Mughal tombs. Masjid Wazir Khan is in Lahore’s old city near Delhi Gate; Sunehri Mosque is in the Kashmiri Bazaar in the old city and was built in 1753 during the decline of the Mughal Empire. Further afield, Derawar Fort lies in the Cholistan Desert near Bahawalpur; Abbasi Masjid is within its complex. These examples illustrate the diversity of historic architecture in Punjab without conflating them with sites in Gujrat District.
