Several aspects of travel come together in Hunza: Karimabad’s history, nearby destinations and how to get there. They differ in scale and character. If you’re looking for a hotel in Hunza, this overview can help you focus your plans on local history, the landscape or the journey to your destination.

Karimabad and Baltit: Local History

Karimabad was formerly known as Baltit and served as Hunza’s cultural and political center for centuries. The town is shaped by traditions, music and community values. Baltit Fort, about 700 years old, reflects Tibetan and Central Asian architectural influences. The town’s historical role and the influences seen in the fort are distinct but interconnected aspects of the area’s cultural heritage.

The preservation of Baltit Fort and the restoration of Karimabad’s historic center were among the first major initiatives of the Aga Khan Historic Cities Programme; both projects were completed in 1996. The work took place at two different scales: the individual fort and the historic town center.

Elevation and Nearby Destinations

Karimabad lies at an elevation of approximately 2,500 meters. Altit Fort and the village of Altit form a nearby historic settlement. Altit Fort is about two kilometers from Karimabad, perched on a cliff with wide views of the valley below. The Eagle’s Nest (Duikar) viewpoint is known for its expansive views at sunrise and sunset. Nearby Attabad Lake is renowned for its striking turquoise color; the drive there is estimated to take about 30 to 40 minutes, though the actual duration may vary. Each excursion offers a different focus: Altit for its historic settlement and valley views, Eagle’s Nest for morning or evening panoramas, and Attabad Lake for its striking color.

How to Get to Karimabad

The Hunza Valley lies along the Karakoram Highway. From Islamabad, the route to Karimabad follows the highway. It covers approximately 550 kilometers, with an estimated driving time of about 20 to 22 hours. The distance and duration answer different planning questions: the kilometer figure indicates the scale of the route, while the hours provide a time estimate. Both are approximate and may vary, so use them as a guide rather than a fixed schedule. Daily flights from Islamabad to Gilgit Airport are another travel option; they are weather-dependent. From there, a scenic drive continues to Karimabad. The options differ in the details that matter for planning: for the road journey, consider the distance and estimated driving time; for the flight, consider the weather dependency and onward travel from Gilgit. Check the flight schedule before departure.

Local Hunza Cuisine

Local Hunza dishes include Hunza bread, Chapshuro and fresh organic apricots. Alongside the historic buildings, the cuisine offers its own cultural focus. Together with the traditions, music and community values, it gives a broader picture of Hunza beyond its architecture.
