Buraimi: Wadis, Winter Excursions and History
Accommodation in Buraimi
Winter excursions, wadis, mountains and dunes, along with historic sites, shape the landscape of Buraimi. The Wilayat of Mahdah and Al Sunaina are especially popular in winter for excursions, camping and exploration. When planning your trip, you can focus on landscapes, trails or cultural history.
Winter Excursions and Sand Landscapes
The Wilayat of Mahdah in Al Buraymi Governorate is a popular winter destination for excursions, camping and exploring wadis, mountains and dunes. In the sands of Mahddah, the winter months are ideal for camping under the open sky and enjoying sand sports. This seasonal focus is a practical consideration if you want to combine your trip with outdoor activities.
The Wilayat of Al Sunaina in Al Buraymi Governorate is also a popular winter destination for excursions, camping and exploring sandy areas. In terms of scenery, Mahdah offers wadis, mountains and dunes, while Al Sunaina is characterized by sandy areas. The golden dunes of Hamasa are also ideal for sand sports.
Trails and Water Landscapes
The Falaj Mahdah hiking trail is considered one of the best routes in the Wilayat of Mahdah. The Al Khatwa Village Loop passes through plantations and the Falaj Al Khatwa oasis.
Wadi Al Qahfi has several pools surrounded by palm trees and flowering oleander. If you are particularly interested in water and vegetation in a wadi landscape, you will find both here.
Falaj Al Rayhani in the Wilayat of Al Sunaina is a Dawoodi falaj that rises from underground. It irrigates extensive areas of fields and palm groves.
Falaj Al Saarani in Shari’a is also a Dawoodi falaj. It is estimated to be about 3,000 years old and extends for 6,500 metres. By comparison, Al Rayhani is notable for its underground source and irrigation, while Al Saarani stands out for its estimated age and length. These specific features help distinguish the two aflaj.
Forts and Historic Sites
Bayt Al Nad Fort is considered the largest and oldest fort in the Wilayat of Mahdah. Its history is thought to date back to before the 18th century.
Hamasa was a historic trading centre that connected Oman with neighbouring countries; the village of Hamasa is in Al Buraymi Governorate. The historic quarter of Hamasa is estimated to be more than 500 years old. It comprises two quarters, a marketplace and several towers connected by Falaj Al Jaimi. In Oman, Bahla Fort and the archaeological sites of Bat, Al-Khutm and Al-Ayn are also UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
