Kinabatangan: Nature and Caves in the Surrounding Area
Accommodation in Kinabatangan
When planning a trip to Kinabatangan, it is worth looking at the surrounding area: in addition to regional area designations, caves and nature-related activities are among the area's attractions. The names do not always refer to a point within the town itself. By distinguishing between locations and distances, you can better understand individual caves, larger areas, and activities that can be arranged.
Protected Areas in the Surrounding Area
In the surrounding area, a total area of 26,000 hectares was designated as the Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary under Sabah's Wildlife Conservation Enactment of 1997. The Lower Kinabatangan is also designated as an Important Bird Area (IBA). The two designations refer to different geographic areas: the historic sanctuary designation and its total area, and the regional IBA classification of the Lower Kinabatangan as a bird area. The sanctuary and IBA therefore refer to larger areas, while cave names identify individual destinations.
Caves in the Area
Agop Batu Tulug is about 41 kilometers from Kota Kinabatangan and is therefore outside the town. The site comprises four main caves: Agop Suriba (lower cave), Agop Lintaga (middle cave), Agop Sawat (upper cave), and Agop Dimunduk. Three names indicate a position within the group; Agop Dimunduk is the fourth main cave. Agop Sawat, the upper cave, is 12 to 15 meters high. If you are categorizing cave destinations by location, you can therefore consider Agop Batu Tulug a destination in the surrounding area rather than within the town.
Another cave destination in the Kinabatangan District is Gomantong Cave. It comprises two cave complexes: Simud Hitam (Black Cave) and Simud Putih (White Cave). The ceiling at the entrance to Simud Hitam Cave reaches up to 300 feet high. A wooden walkway at Gomantong Cave allows visitors to explore the caves and observe the work of experienced collectors. Check current access arrangements before visiting. In the evening, millions of bats leave the cave to feed while swiftlets return.
The two cave destinations are located in different areas: Agop Batu Tulug is about 41 kilometers from Kota Kinabatangan, while Gomantong is in Kinabatangan District. At Agop, the main caves are distinguished by their positions; Gomantong is divided into two named complexes.
Planning Nature Activities
MESCOT KOPEL is a community-based ecotourism initiative for Batu Puteh in the Lower Kinabatangan and can arrange jungle treks, river cruises, and birdwatching for visitors. The IBA designation describes the regional bird area; birdwatching with MESCOT KOPEL, by contrast, is a specific activity. The three options differ in their focus: jungle trekking, river cruises, and birdwatching involve getting around on foot, on the water, or observing birds. A tour to the Supu Caves can be arranged in advance directly with MESCOT KOPEL or with local tour operators. Check which arrangements are currently available before your trip.
