Penang Hill also offers further temple and nature experiences. If you are looking for a hotel in Air Itam, you can first consider whether the landscape, architectural history or nature activities are especially important to your trip.
Penang Hill: Summit and Rail Connection
Penang Hill in Air Itam comprises a group of peaks. Its highest point is Western Hill, at 833 metres above sea level. The elevation therefore refers to a specific point within the group of peaks.
The Penang Hill funicular railway connects its lower station in Air Itam with the upper station on Flagstaff Hill. When getting your bearings, it is helpful to distinguish between these place names: Western Hill is the highest point, while Flagstaff Hill is the location of the upper station. This makes it possible to consider the landscape and rail connection separately when planning your trip.
Temples and Architectural History
Kek Lok Si Temple is part of Air Itam’s cultural landscape. Construction began in 1891. Its halls, pagodas and archways are adorned inside and out with images of Buddha, carvings, sculptures and murals. Along with its historic beginnings, the temple complex is defined by a range of building types and their artworks.
The temple on Penang Hill is called Sri Aruloli Thirumurugan and is also known as Penang Hill Hindu Temple. It is located on Gun Hill. In the 19th century, Indian sepoys and palanquin bearers established a small shrine there to the Hindu deity Murugan.
The three names refer to different locations: Western Hill is the highest point, Flagstaff Hill is the location of the upper station, and Gun Hill is on Penang Hill, where the Hindu temple is located.
