Pulau Tioman is the largest of the nine islands that make up the Pulau Tioman Marine Park. The island lies about 32 nautical miles east of Tanjung Gemok in Pahang. When looking for a hotel on Tioman Island, you can start by deciding what you want to focus on during your trip: Would you like to explore reefs, hike through the rainforest, discover activities in the villages, or visit several island villages? The island offers different starting points for these interests.

Juara between reefs and rainforest

Juara is on Tioman’s east coast, at the transition between the Tioman Marine Park and the island’s terrestrial forest reserve. The Marine Park protects the reefs and surrounding waters; in the forest reserve, ancient rainforest and an extensive network of jungle trails shape the landscape. Here, the sea and forest stand side by side as different aspects of the protected environment.

Three offshore coral reefs are within walking distance of the Juara Turtle Project. They can be reached directly from the shore for snorkeling, diving and reef restoration; no boat is required. If, instead, you’re interested in the island trail through the forest, you’ll find a jungle path that starts at the village mosque in Tekek. After 3 km through hilly rainforest, it reaches the paved road to Juara. Conditions on the route can vary; check them before setting out. This offers two different options: an excursion to the reefs from shore and a trail through the rainforest.

Diving, surfing and climbing

At Kampung Salang on Tioman, Magicienne Rock is one of the dive sites. In Kampung Juara, surfing is possible when wind conditions are favorable. The wind is therefore an explicit factor for this activity. In southern Tioman, large granite boulders and karst formations offer opportunities for climbing. The highlights described thus range from underwater sites and wind-dependent surfing to rock formations in the island’s interior.

Island villages, culture and orientation

The island villages also offer different perspectives beyond sports and nature. Batik classes are offered in Kampung Genting; check the current schedule locally. Nenek Semukut was one of two mountain peaks on Tioman used as a backdrop for the 1958 film South Pacific. Tioman also has a protected colony of flying foxes along the beach.

In Kampung Tekek, the Marine Park Visitor’s Centre is just a short walk from the village. It presents the nine islands protected in the park, offering an overview of the Marine Park’s composition. The visit is relevant to getting oriented on the island, while the reefs at Juara and Magicienne Rock are specific points of interest for snorkeling and diving.

Getting there and traveling between villages

The main ferry departure points for Tioman are Teluk Gading Jetty in Pahang and Mersing Jetty in Johor. The crossing takes about 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on sea conditions and the arrival jetty. Check the schedule separately when planning your trip. On Tioman, a sea taxi ferry service connects the villages; you should also check its schedule separately. The mainland crossing and travel between island villages are two separate aspects of trip planning: sea conditions and the arrival jetty matter for the crossing, while the sea taxi service schedule matters for travel between villages.

Find hotels to suit your travel interests

When looking for hotels on Tioman Island, you can first sort out your priorities on the island. The reefs at Juara, a dive site at Kampung Salang, the jungle trail from Tekek to Juara and wind-dependent surfing in Kampung Juara each cater to different interests. If you’d like to visit several villages, take the sea taxi ferry service into account and check its schedule. This lets you consider activities and connections between island villages as separate aspects of your trip planning.
