Kelantan: Rainforest, Culture and Coast
Accommodation in Kelantan
At Gua Cha, flexed burials tell of a distant past; elsewhere, rainforest, royal collections and traditional performances take center stage. Kelantan therefore offers a wide range of starting points for planning your trip. If you’re looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether nature and hiking, history and museums, or the coast should shape your stay.
Rainforest and Hiking Area
Taman Negara Kuala Koh is located in the state of Kelantan, in the Gua Musang district and within the Bukit Hantu and Lebir forest reserves. Its tropical rainforest ecosystem is characterized by diverse flora and fauna and is well suited to ecotourism. This gives the area a distinct natural appeal alongside Kelantan’s museums and cultural sites.
Gunung Stong also combines scenery with practical guidance for hikers. The ascent can begin in Kg. Jelawang via a logging road. Alternatively, the village road runs 2.8 kilometers to the Jelawang Resort; the distance can be covered by van or local vehicle. Check local transport options before planning, as arrangements may change. The hiking area can be reached via nearby Dabong; hikers use the railway station there when traveling to Dabong.
Gunung Stong also has a tall waterfall with a large, deep, calm pool where visitors can slide and swim. The natural surroundings and water levels may affect your visit, so check local conditions and access on site. Archaeologically, Gua Cha offers a different perspective on the region: the flexed burials found there in Kelantan are attributed to the Hoabinhian period, around 10,000 years ago.
Royal History, Museums and Performances
Istana Jahar is now home to the Muzium Diraja Negeri Kelantan. It presents the history of the Kelantan Sultanate, from its beginnings to the Sultan’s current reign. Exhibits include weapons, traditional clothing and other items related to the Sultanate. The Muzium Diraja Istana Batu offers a different perspective on royal history, displaying royal objects, photographs and the genealogy of Kelantan’s royal family.
The Muzium Negeri brings Kelantan’s history to life through photographs and artifacts. The Muzium Perang focuses on a different part of history: it commemorates the impact of the Second World War in Kelantan from 1941 to 1945 and includes, among other things, a wax figure of a Japanese soldier. At the Muzium Wau Kelantan, meanwhile, you can see different types of kites from around the world. The museum also serves as an information and reference center on the history of kites worldwide and the craft of making them.
Gelanggang Seni is dedicated to preserving and promoting Kelantan’s culture. Traditional performances are held there regularly three times a week: on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. As performance days may change, check the schedule before your visit. For visual arts, the Balai Seni Lukis Kelantan in Kota Bharu displays 73 paintings on its lower floor. The gallery is also used for temporary exhibitions and activities such as painting workshops and competitions; the programs on offer may vary.
Coast, Market and Practical Information
At Pantai Cahaya Bulan, you can enjoy fresh drinks made from young coconuts and light meals. Along the road to the beach, you’ll also find village businesses that visitors can explore, including batik, food and handicraft businesses. This combines a coastal visit with a look at a range of local businesses, without requiring a particular program.
Pasar Malam Wakaf Che Yeh is a market selling clothing, accessories, household goods and souvenirs. As its operations and product range may change, it’s worth checking the latest information before visiting. Another place to take a break is Taman Indera Petra, a recreational park next to the Kelantan State Secretary’s office. It has visitor facilities and activities; their condition may vary, so checking on site is recommended.
Tourism Kelantan operates an information counter in the public arrivals area of Sultan Ismail Petra Airport for visitors arriving in Kelantan. You can get information about Kelantan when you arrive.
