Discover Pontian: Coast and Bugis Culture
Accommodation in Pontian
Pontian combines public coastal recreation areas with nearby cultural sites related to the Bugis. Boat trips are also available in the surrounding area. These attractions differ in character and offer you different starting points for planning your trip.
Public Coastal Recreation Areas
Dataran Majlis Perbandaran Pontian and Laman Diraja are public recreation areas on the coast of Pontian. Locals use both spots for jogging and aerobics, particularly on weekends. This gives the coastal areas a different character from the nearby cultural sites: public recreation and exercise take centre stage here. The weekend connection is a useful guide if you are interested in local leisure activities.
Bugis History at a Museum and Memorial
The Muzium Bugis is located near Pontian. On 26 July 1994, the Johor state government, through Yayasan Warisan Johor, recognised the museum as Malaysia’s first Bugis museum. Exhibits include documents and musical instruments such as the gendang and gong, as well as coins from the colonial period. Jelur or penak boats are also part of the collection; the Bugis used boats of this kind as watercraft in the past. The varied objects range from documents and musical instruments to coins and boats. This is a clear cultural focus for travellers interested in the different material artefacts of the Bugis. The historic boats in the museum are distinct from the boat trips available in the surrounding area.
The Memorial Daeng Haddadek Seri Saleiwangeng is also located near Pontian and features a traditional house made of belian wood with Bugis-influenced architecture. It was built without nails. Unlike the objects assembled in the museum, this site draws attention to the construction of a house. Comparing the two offers different ways to explore Bugis culture: a varied display of objects and a building with distinctive construction features. Please contact the owner before your visit. Plan to visit the memorial only after making contact.
Boat Trips Nearby
Boat trips on the Sungai Peradin or Sungai Pulai are available near Pontian. Unlike the Jelur or penak boats displayed at the Muzium Bugis, these trips are a separate experience on one of the rivers mentioned. If a boat trip is part of your plans, check the schedule in advance.
Different Focuses for Your Stay
When choosing what to do, it helps to understand how these experiences differ: the Muzium Bugis brings together various groups of objects, while the memorial focuses on the construction of a house. The coastal areas are places for public recreation, while the boat trips offer an activity on one of the rivers. You can therefore first decide whether you would like your trip to focus more on Bugis culture, outdoor exercise or a river trip.
