If you’re looking for a hotel in Chiyam, the town’s history can help put the destination into context. In El Khiyam, different historical periods intersect: a complex built by the French in the 1930s, its later use as the Khiam Detention Center, British fortifications during World War II, and the memory of a traditional weekly market. The Dardara Pond Park project forms a separate chapter in the town’s history. Chiyam can thus be understood through several distinct themes: the town’s history, a project at the pond, and the wider regional context.

The Khiam Detention Center

The Khiam Detention Center was converted from a base into a detention camp in early 1985 and was used until Israel withdrew from Lebanon in May 2000. It stood on a hill overlooking El Khiyam, within a complex built by the French in the 1930s. The site was destroyed in 2006. Several decades separate the construction of the complex from its conversion into a detention camp, so the building history and its later use should be clearly distinguished chronologically.

World War II fortifications

An earlier historical period spans the years 1941 to 1943. During World War II, British troops built fortifications in and around El Khiyam, including large trenches and defensive barriers. The facilities also included an airfield and an underground field hospital. A large underground hospital was located on the northeastern edge of the plain below El Khiyam, near the Dardara spring.

The Dardara Pond project

The Dardara Pond Park project was launched to improve the pond’s infrastructure, restore the surrounding area, and use it as a recreational space. The project included a 266-meter circular path around the pond. It therefore combined two scales: a precisely measured path by the water and a broader goal for the surrounding area. This combination sets the project apart from a simple description of a walking route.

The former Thursday market

The traditional Thursday market in El Khiyam is also part of the town’s everyday history. It took place every week for decades, until fighting, war, and the displacement of the population interrupted this regular routine. Unlike the detention camp and the fortifications, the market represents a recurring social rhythm: its history combines a specific weekly routine with a marked interruption. The market thus complements the perspective on historic sites with a glimpse into everyday life in the past.

Chiyam within the wider Nabatieh destination

The wider destination of Nabatieh offers another regional perspective. Wadi al-Hujair Nature Reserve extends across the districts of Nabatiyeh, Bint Jbeil, and Marjayoun. Nabatiyeh District is the administrative center of Nabatiyeh Governorate and is known for its annual Ashura commemorations. These two regional connections are distinct: the nature reserve spans several districts, while Nabatiyeh is an administrative district known for its commemorations. This regional context complements the stories of El Khiyam and Dardara Pond while keeping the different aspects of trip planning distinct.
