Cultural highlights to consider when planning your trip to Zouk Mikael include the Zouk Mikael International Festival, held every July, the history of the Old Souk, and the activities of the Youth & Culture Center. The venues also differ in character and capacity: from the Roman amphitheater to the Public Park arena, the theater in the cultural center, and the small theater in the public garden. You can plan your hotel stay around a festival date, cultural history, or a specific program.

Events and Programs

The Zouk Mikael International Festival takes place every July. It is held in a Roman-style amphitheater with a capacity of 3,000 people. Specific event arrangements may vary. If you want to plan your trip around the festival, check the dates for your travel period.

The Public Park arena is equipped with sound and lighting systems and is intended for international events. This provides another venue with its own profile alongside the festival amphitheater: the arena is characterized by its technical facilities and intended use for international events.

The Youth & Culture Center offers weekly, monthly, and seasonal activities. These include language classes, painting lessons for children and adults, and storytime sessions for young children. The activities therefore cover a range of subjects and age groups—from language and painting programs to storytime for the youngest children. Check the current program directly if a particular class or date is important to your plans.

The Youth & Culture Center theater can accommodate up to 110 people. It is suitable for concerts, plays, dance and piano lessons, a film club, and public awareness campaigns by NGOs. Its uses range from performances and classes to information events. Compared with the 3,000-seat amphitheater, the Center theater is considerably smaller.

There is a clear difference to consider when choosing your travel dates: the festival takes place every July, while the Youth & Culture Center activities are organized into weekly, monthly, and seasonal formats. If a particular event is to determine your stay, check its specific dates and the current program.

History of the Old Souk

The Old Souk was known for weaving, shoemaking, carpentry, gemology, Nawl weaving, and canning. These craft traditions encompass textile work and workshops, as well as gemology and preservation. The souk’s development also included converting its lower section into a pedestrian zone.

In 1988, the Zouk Mikael municipal council, under Nohad Naufal, initiated the restoration of the Old Souk to preserve its traditional architectural character. The “Al-Mir” Coffee Shop in the Old Souk is an archaeological landmark. The crafts, restoration, and this named landmark give the souk different historical associations.

Public Garden

The public garden features a small Roman theater, a stream, several water features, and a children’s play area. The theater can host cultural and educational events. Water features and a play area sit alongside a theater that can be used for cultural and educational programs. Check the current condition of the facilities before visiting.
